Discover 15 easy summer decorating ideas that bring warmth, color, and a breezy seasonal feeling to every room in your home without a lot of effort or expense.

Summer is my favorite season to decorate, and not because it requires a lot of effort. It is actually just the opposite. Summer decorating is all about keeping things light, easy, and full of the simple beauty the season naturally brings. A few thoughtful touches are truly all you need to make your home feel like summer.

In this post, I am sharing 15 of my best summer decorating ideas, from swapping out heavy textiles to bringing in seasonal flowers, coastal accents, and the scents that make a home smell like a warm, happy season. These ideas work whether you are starting fresh or just giving your home a little seasonal refresh. Let’s get into it!

Keep Decorating Simple

My best tip for summer decorating is to keep things simple. When the weather warms up and life fills with barbecues, vacations, and time spent outside, a home that feels light and uncluttered is the most welcoming kind. You don’t need to redecorate every room. A few intentional swaps and some well-chosen seasonal touches are all it takes to make your home feel ready for summer.

🌿 TIP BOX: Start your summer refresh by removing a few items from each room that feel heavy, dark, or out of season. Creating a little breathing room is often all a space needs to feel instantly more summery.

Tidy Up

There is something about a tidy home in the summer that just feels refreshing. When surfaces are clear and clutter is kept at bay, even the simplest seasonal accents look intentional and beautiful. Summer entertaining also tends to be more spontaneous than in other seasons, so a tidy home is a ready home.

One thing that makes a real difference in our home is taking a 15- to 20-minute reset every evening. I start in the kitchen, making sure everything is in order and my sink is clean, then move from room to room fluffing pillows and putting anything out of place back where it belongs. The big benefit is waking up each morning to a calm, happy home. It is such a good way to start the day.

I also do a quick tidy each morning after breakfast. I make the bed, run a duster over the flat surfaces in the public areas, clean the bathroom sinks, and diffuse a summer scent. Between the two, the house stays in pretty good shape all summer long. See How To Declutter Your Home In 15 Minutes A Day.

🌿 TIP BOX: Go room by room and remove anything that doesn’t belong there. Put it away, donate it, or toss it. A clutter-free surface makes even the simplest summer vignette look pulled together.

Lighten Up Textiles

When warmer weather rolls in, swapping out heavy fabrics is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do to make your home feel like summer. Pack away the heavy pillows, thick draperies, chunky throws, and flannel bedding, and bring in light cotton, linen, and other breathable materials. Stripes, checks, and sweet florals are perfect for adding a summery touch to any room.

8 Ideas For Decorating A Small Bedroom Without Buying Furniture is a wonderful guide to making every bedroom in your home feel light and summer-ready. A white matelasse coverlet layered with a lightweight floral is just enough for warm nights and air-conditioned rooms.

White bench with a woven seat, a gold and white geometric print cushion, and a large cream and rust block print floral pillow in front of bright windows with summer greenery outside

You might also want to consider lightening up these textiles too…

  • curtains
  • throw blankets
  • duvets
  • rugs
  • table runners
  • tablecloths
  • placemats

🌿 TIP BOX: Store your heavier pillows, throws, and bedding in a labeled bin or basket so they are easy to find when fall rolls around. Swapping textiles seasonally is so much easier when everything has a place to go.

A light color scheme creates a cool, summery vibe throughout the whole house. Don’t forget to add pops of color in navy, citrus hues, and fresh greens.

Decorate With Summer Flowers and Organics

Light and airy living room with a white sofa styled with a jute pom pom pillow, a white striped pillow, and neutral linen pillows, a white coffee table with stacked books, a woven basket, and a potted green plant

Summer is all about bringing blooms inside. A flower arrangement or centerpiece does not have to be grand to be beautiful. It can be as simple as a little greenery and a couple of fresh blooms tucked into a tiny bottle or a mason jar. If you don’t have a garden, the grocery store has wonderful options all season long.

My favorite way to use summer flowers is to make small, simple arrangements and tuck them into corners of my home where I will see them throughout the day. A few knockout roses and some greenery from the side yard are a sweet welcome when I walk to the kitchen for my first cup of coffee. And summer flowers by the sink make doing the dishes a whole lot prettier!

Here are some of my favorite summer flowers for cutting and arranging…

  • hydrangeas
  • sunflowers
  • knockout roses
  • daisies
  • salvia
  • peonies
  • geraniums
  • lantana
  • butterfly bush blooms

🌿 TIP BOX: To keep cut flowers fresh longer, trim the stems at an angle, change the water every day or two, and keep arrangements out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. A little care goes a long way toward keeping summer blooms looking beautiful all week.

Use Natural Fiber Materials

Wicker, jute, rattan, and other natural fiber materials are perfectly suited to summer. They bring an easy, relaxed texture to a space that feels completely at home with the season. Incorporate them into furnishings and accents such as lotus-leaf rattan placemats, sisal rugs, woven trays, and wicker baskets.

Jute rugs are one of my favorite summer swaps. They bring an earthy, natural texture to a room that works beautifully with the light and airy feeling of summer. They are durable, breathable, and their warm neutral tones blend effortlessly with almost any summer color palette.

See How To Mix And Match Rugs And Coordinate Them Like A Pro.

🌿 TIP BOX: Natural fiber rugs like jute and sisal can be sensitive to moisture, so avoid placing them in bathrooms or other high-humidity areas. For high-traffic rooms, look for a jute and chenille blend, which offers the same natural look with a little more durability underfoot.

Set A Summery Table

Overhead view of a colorful summer outdoor table setting with a blue and white striped runner, mixed blue and white dishes, crystal glassware, silver napkin rings, and a vibrant garden flower arrangement with pink roses, orange lantana, and purple blooms

Setting a summery table using seasonal elements is such a joy. Whether you are gathering inside or out on the patio, a pretty table sets the mood for any meal and makes even the simplest occasion feel special. Use seasonal flowers, lightweight textiles, and your favorite dishes to create a table that feels effortlessly summery.

If you are hosting a larger group, keep the menu simple. Ask guests to bring a dish, set up a taco bar, or fire up the grill for burgers and hot dogs. Summer was made for easy, relaxed entertaining.

I love to set a table around a theme and then carry that same feeling over to the food. It makes everything feel cohesive and intentional without a lot of extra effort.

A tip I swear by: photograph every table you set. Your own photos are a visual recipe for recreating your favorite tablescapes anytime you want. Who says you can’t remake a beloved setup?

🌿 TIP BOX: You don’t need a full set of matching dishes to set a beautiful summer table. Mix and match patterns, colors, and textures for a collected, personal look that feels more interesting than a perfectly matched set ever could.

Infuse Your Home With Summer Scents

One of my favorite and most underrated summer decorating ideas is adding the scents of the season to your home. Scent is mood, and the right aroma can instantly make a space feel like summer. Diffuse summer scents, burn a scented candle, or simmer a pot of fresh herbs on the stove, letting the fragrance drift through every room. My personal favorites are mint and geranium.

You can also make your own simmer pot using whole fruits or just the peel, clippings from your herb garden, and a few flower petals. It is so easy and smells absolutely wonderful.

Overhead view of a glass pot of summer simmer pot with lemon slices, fresh mint leaves, lavender sprigs, and chamomile flowers on a white marble surface surrounded by scattered citrus and botanicals

Here are some popular summer scents to try…

  • citrus
  • lemongrass
  • any summer florals
  • fresh linen
  • beach house
  • orange
  • lime
  • lemon
  • grapefruit
  • rainstorm
  • mojito
  • lemonade
  • spearmint
  • peppermint

See how easy it is to make a Summer Simmer Pot.

🌿 TIP BOX: Use unscented candles in rooms where you are already diffusing essential oils or burning a scented candle. Too many competing fragrances at once can feel overwhelming rather than welcoming. One beautiful scent per room is always enough.

Add A Little Coastal Charm

Two white ceramic ginger jars with white starfish tied around their necks with natural jute twine on a silver tray for a simple coastal summer accent

Coastal accents are one of the easiest ways to bring the feeling of summer into your home, even if you are nowhere near a beach. Start with a color palette of blues, whites, and sandy beiges. Layer in a few natural and nautical elements like seashells, driftwood, rope, and woven baskets. A glass vase filled with beach finds, a lantern, or even a piece of vintage ocean artwork can do a lot of the heavy lifting.

The key is restraint. A little bit of coastal decor goes a very long way. A shell-filled glass container on the coffee table, a chinoiserie oyster spoon rest, or one meaningful piece of art with an ocean scene is often all you need.

The glass container of shells on our console table is one of my favorite summer details. My grandkids collected every one of those shells on a trip to Corolla OBX last year. I love that they have a story.

🌿 TIP BOX: Treasures collected on a trip to the water- shells, sea glass, smooth stones- make the most personal and charming coastal displays because they carry a memory. Display them simply in a glass bowl or apothecary jar, and they will mean so much more than anything you could buy.

Decorate With In-Season Fruit and Vegetables

Your refrigerator’s fruit and vegetable drawer is full of summer decorating potential. Right now, strawberries are at their peak, and a big bowl of freshly washed ones on the counter is both beautiful and practical. It is a genuine win on both counts: pretty and ready to nibble!

A bowl of lemons with their leaves intact makes a quick and gorgeous centerpiece. Artichokes in a wide, shallow white bowl look like summer to me every single time. And tomatoes and peaches both keep better on the countertop than in the refrigerator, so there is no reason not to let them be part of your decor.

Many fruits and vegetables are naturally beautiful. Don’t miss the opportunity to let them do double duty as both nourishment and seasonal decor.

🌿 TIP BOX: When using fruit and vegetables as decor, choose pieces that are just shy of fully ripe. They will look their best for longer, and you can enjoy eating them once they are perfectly ready. It is the most delicious decorating hack there is!

Choose Summery Accent Decor

Using summery accent decor throughout your home creates a light, fresh, and inviting atmosphere that feels completely right for the season. Think decor with a casual, natural, or coastal feel. Summer annuals and perennials are my personal favorite way to bring a bit of the season indoors, and they work beautifully tucked into almost any vignette.

Don’t be afraid to try your hand at a simple DIY project either. Making your own summer accents adds a personal touch that you just can’t buy. Rope-Wrapped Candleholders are one of my favorites. This project is genuinely easy, and you do not need to be crafty at all to pull it off beautifully.

🌿 TIP BOX: When pulling together a summer vignette, aim for a mix of three elements: something natural like a plant or shells, something with texture like a basket or woven box, and something with a pop of color like a bloom or a piece of colorful pottery. That simple combination works every single time.

Have A Summer-Ready Front Door

Woven seagrass basket hanging on a white front door overflowing with white hydrangeas and eucalyptus sprigs tied with a large black and white striped ribbon bow

Your front door is the first thing guests and passersby see, so starting your summer decor there makes a lot of sense. A seasonal wreath or door basket instantly gives your entryway a warm, welcoming look that carries all the way to your porch and outdoor spaces.

I typically hang a new wreath at the start of each season. It is a small change that makes a big visual impact and costs very little time or money to pull off.

🌿 TIP BOX: When hanging a wreath or door basket, make sure it is proportional to your door. A wreath that is too small will get lost on a large door. As a general rule, your wreath should be about half the width of your door for the best visual impact.

Be Patriotic

Summer is the most patriotic season of the year, and for good reason. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day all fall within a few months of each other, giving us plenty of opportunities to fly the flag and add a touch of red, white, and blue to our homes.

You don’t need to go over the top to make a patriotic statement. A flag displayed proudly on the front porch, a simple vignette of red, white, and blue dishes on the kitchen table, or a small arrangement of white flowers with a couple of tucked-in American flags is all it takes. My favorite version is a pretty kitchen table vignette using colorful dishes and blooms from our yard.

Remember to tuck a small American flag or two into your arrangements and vignettes throughout the summer. It is a simple touch that feels meaningful every single time.

🌿 TIP BOX: You don’t need to buy new decor to be patriotic. A small American flag tucked into a flower arrangement, a red candle on a white tray, or a blue and white dish towel draped over the oven handle are all it takes to bring a little red, white, and blue into your home.

Pay Attention To Your Guest Rooms

Guest rooms get more use in the summer than at any other time of the year, so giving them a little seasonal attention is absolutely worth it. A summer-ready guest room makes overnight visitors feel genuinely welcomed and cared for, and that is one of the best things you can do as a host.

(keep the image)

Here are a few easy ways to get your guest room summer-ready…

  • Lighten up fabrics and bedding
  • Use light layers on the bed
  • Add a decorative throw at the end of the bed so your guests can use it as a cover if they nap
  • Put a fan in a closet for guests who like the air to circulate
  • Add fresh summer flowers next to the bed
  • Put a luggage rack in the room, this is so thoughtful any time of year

Get Summer Guest Room Ideas that will keep your guests happy and cool.

🌿 TIP BOX: Think of your guest room as a little hotel room. A few thoughtful extras like a carafe of water, a good book, a scented candle, and a small basket of travel-sized toiletries go a long way toward making your guests feel truly at home.

Use Baskets

Beautiful white pansy flowers in a rustic woven basket, ideal for enhancing your home’s interior with natural charm and elegance.

Baskets are part of my home decor all year long, but summer is when they really earn their keep. They are practical, beautiful, and completely at home with the season’s laid-back style.

I use baskets to corral everything we need for summer living: sunscreen, bug spray, bathing suits, flip flops, and towels. And I use them to carry dishes outside when we are dining al fresco. I have a basket on my nightstand filled with “lotions and potions”, and a few small things I reach for before bed. And I always have a basket or two holding my current stack of decorating magazines and books.

Baskets are wonderfully textural containers for summer flowers, keeping something like a coffee station together, or even for pretty, summer wall decor.

For summer, look for lighter-colored baskets in natural fibers like cotton coil, seagrass, or light wicker. Baskets with lids are particularly useful because they let you stash things in plain sight without any visual clutter.

🌿 TIP BOX: Use a large lidded basket near your back door or mudroom to corral all the things your family grabs on the way outside: sunscreen, bug spray, hats, and sunglasses. It keeps everything in one place and makes summer days a little less chaotic.

Create A Summer Outdoor Space

Summer porch with black iron patio chairs with navy and white geometric cushions, a matching outdoor rug, a blue pot of red geraniums, and a white ceramic planter on a side table overlooking a green landscape

Summer living happens outside as much as it does inside, and even a small outdoor space deserves a little seasonal attention. A front porch, back patio, or deck can become one of the most used rooms in your home during the warmer months with just a few thoughtful touches.

We just finished a complete update of our patio, and I could not be more pleased with how it turned out. While we did invest in some new furniture, a lot of what we did was budget-friendly. We spray-painted a few pieces that needed refreshing, and I made cushions and pillow covers to give everything we kept a fresh, new look. It is amazing what a little creativity and effort can do! Look for pictures later in June.

Add a couple of outdoor throw pillows in summer colors, hang a string of lights for evening ambiance, and bring out a lantern or two for a warm, welcoming glow after dark. A simple outdoor rug defines the space and anchors the seating area beautifully.

If you have space for a small bistro table and two chairs, that is all you need for a morning coffee spot or an evening glass of lemonade. Summer outdoor living does not have to be elaborate to be wonderful.

🌿 TIP BOX: Before buying anything new for your outdoor space, take a look at what you already have. A can of spray paint, some new cushion covers, and a potted plant or two can completely transform a tired patio without much expense.

Use Summer Lighting

Close up of a clear mason jar filled with birdseed holding a white pillar candle as a summer outdoor lantern with colorful garden flowers and dusty miller in the background

Lighting is one of the most underused summer decorating tools, and it makes such a difference in how a home feels, especially after the sun goes down. Candles, lanterns, and string lights all create a warm, soft glow that feels made for summer evenings, both inside and out.

I love a cluster of candles on the coffee table or the dining table for summer evenings. A lantern on the front porch or patio adds an inviting charm that is hard to achieve any other way. And string lights strung along a pergola, fence, or deck railing instantly transform an outdoor space into something special.

Summer lighting does not have to be expensive or complicated. A few well-placed candles and a lantern or two will do more for the atmosphere of your home than almost anything else on this list.

🌿 TIP BOX: For outdoor string lights, look for bulbs with a warm white glow rather than bright white or cool white. Warm white creates a soft, inviting ambiance that feels like summer, while cool white can feel harsh and uninviting after dark.

FAQs About Summer Decorating

How can I make my house feel more summery?

Start by swapping out heavy fabrics for lighter ones in cotton or linen, and clear away any decor that feels dark or wintry. Bring in a few seasonal touches like fresh flowers, a bowl of fruit on the counter, or a jute rug, and add a summery scent with a candle or simmer pot. Small, intentional changes make a bigger difference than you might expect.

Think light layers rather than heavy ones. A lightweight cotton throw draped over the sofa, a new summer color woven into your existing color story, and the warmth that comes from textural pieces like baskets, woven trays, and nubby textiles all create a cozy feeling without adding any visual or physical heaviness to a room. Coziness in summer is really just about layering the right things in the right amounts.

  35. CarolBinTX says:

I’m going to be gone from my home from the end of August, partly into November. So, I’m wondering about what to do about decor so that I’m not looking at “beachy” stuff when I return home. I’m thinking about switching to my white pottery pieces, skip the pumpkins this year and add smatterings of amber glass and yellow/gold accents, sunflowers, etc. I think that’s a good compromise to transition into the Fall season without it looking too committed either way. A family member will be staying here while I’m gone (she really doesn’t care or understand my decor fetish) and I don’t want to return to something I’d feel I’d have to change for a short period before Thanksgiving.

This is going to happen more frequently. My daughter and her husband who now live 5 miles away are moving 1200 miles away and they are taking the grandkids whom I currently see a few times a week! Fortunately, they chose a house with a finished granny suite in the walkout basement!

I think it would be so nice to have a pretty basket of goodies and a bouquet of fresh flowers in each bedroom for the guests! Just to add something special for each guest!

    Yvonne, hello!
I am pleased to learn that you and I share many similar decorating styling tips. I particularly like the addition of artichokes on the table and will add that as a interesting nuance to summer.

    Blessings,

    Marie Empringham

  46. I love all your tips! I just cut some flowers from my yard today and put them in my entry way! I have some herbs growing in my kitchen window but I think I need some pretty flowers to look at. Love your pretty flowers on your front door too! Really though I need all your dishes 😉 Oh my gosh they are just so beautiful! I need to look around at your blog to see where you store all your dishes and linens. I am running out of space and need to be creative where to put them!

    Hugs,
    Karin

  47. I love these ideas. Love the colors with the whites and blues.

  48. My favorite thing to do every season is to change up the decor. It feels fresh and gets us in that seasonal vibe.

  49. Your small bouquet idea is so delightful. I immediately gathered up my small containers, went and gathered not only my flowers but added a touch of herbs. Brightened up the corners of my house not only with the colors but the scent. Thank you

  50. Thank you for fresh decorating ideas that are realistic and doable!

  51. Love your taste and especially the part about decorating with flowers!

I love the list for flowers to pick and bring I as cut flowers! Looking to expand my garden and definitely going to try some!

  53. The neutral pallet is great to work with by adding color thru the seasons!

Your summer home is like a beach retreat. Absolutely inviting and refreshing. I enjoy incorporating yellow and lime green accents in our decor for the summer. My faux flowers are a combination of these two colors. These colors liven up my spirit. Thank you for your always helpful suggestions.

  55. I love your decorating style and thanks for sharing!

  56. Thanks for sharing this beautiful decorating ideas with us.

  57. Yvonne, your writing got me so enthused while a luscious egg bake was in the oven that I interrupted reading and freshly-brewed coffee to quickly implement five more of your ideas: Picked fresh lavender bouquet from my Arizona xeriscape yard (several flourishing 3 ft plants). Brought out blue mason jars to hold the blooms. Already had white flat basket on front door holding blue hydrangeas and flag. Switched out pillow covers to complement summery white matelasse coverlet. Fresh placemats, with layered white dishes from Italy. I’m enchanted by the beauty and memories of inherited sterling as my everyday flatware…and with your suggested flowers at the sink, handwashing feels easy. Thanks for the inspiration to get me going so simply, and in a few minutes. Now I’ll read the remaining blog and get into more trouble, ha! Your lovely lifestyle tips are the best and much appreciated.

  58. I always love your matelasse bedspreads, but have difficulty finding ones that don’t shrink up terribly when washed & dried. Can you suggest a good source?

    1. Hi Laura, I’ve never had that problem. I’ve found my coverlets at HomeGoods and Pottery Barn.

  59. Love the summer decorating tips! Thank you!
Where did you find the white lanterns with cut outs and handles on your post about decorating with lemons in a large white bowl?

    1. Hi Sheryl, I found those at Pottery Barn over a decade ago. They have been one of StoneGable’s most popular accent decor. Happy Mother’s Day!
