What Is Mercy? A Biblical Look At God’s Lovingkindness

Mercy is something we truly cannot live without. Discover the biblical meaning of mercy, the Hebrew word chesed, and how God’s mercy meets us in our time of need.

If I were to ask you to make a list of ten things you could not live without, what would be on it? Food, money, health, home, kids, grandkids? All good answers for a top ten list. But have you ever thought to put mercy on that list, and near the very top? Mercy is something we truly cannot live without. So if we cannot live without real mercy, what is mercy, exactly? Let’s explore this deep and wide word together, and see just how much God has for us in it.

What Is Mercy

Mercy, the word CHESED (pronounced khesed) in Hebrew, is one of the richest and most precious words in Scripture. God’s moral character is full of mercy. CHESED goes to the very heart of who God is.

There is really no single word in English that fully captures CHESED. We often translate it as God’s lovingkindness, kindness, or mercy. But God’s true mercy is so much more than any one of these words can hold.

Chesed is a covenant word. A covenant is a solemn, binding agreement, one that goes even deeper than a promise. It is a commitment that does not waver.

Chesed means undeserved benevolence, withholding the judgment we deserve. It is a word of great relief and security for those longing for God’s spiritual comfort and for those wanting to see His compassion at work in their lives.

Chesed is abundant because God’s measure of mercy is limitless. It is everlasting. God not only pours out mercy in great measure, but He is also not bound by time, and neither is the mercy He lavishes on us.

What Chesed Reveals About God’s Character

CHESED is not just something God does. It is who God is. His mercy flows directly from His character, and that is what makes it so trustworthy.

Think about what it means to be in covenant with someone. A covenant is not a casual arrangement that can be broken when it becomes inconvenient. It is a binding commitment, and God is the one who keeps it, even when we fail to.

This is exactly what happens when we put our trust in Jesus. We become bound to Him in covenant, and He takes on the responsibility for our eternal security. That is not a small thing. Our standing before God does not rest on our own ability to hold on. It rests on His.

Lovingkindness, then, is not simply a word we use to describe a feeling God has toward us. It is how Jesus actually looks at us and acts toward us, day after day. It is patient where we are impatient, faithful where we are unfaithful, and steady where we are unsteady. This is the heart of chesed, and it is the heart of God.

Mercy Throughout Scripture

Chesed, God’s lovingkindness, is not a word that appears once and disappears. It runs like a thread through all of Scripture, showing us again and again who God is and how He deals with His people.

THE LORD IS COMPASSIONATE AND GRACIOUS, SLOW TO ANGER AND ABUNDANT IN LOVINGKINDNESS. Psalm 103:8

Here we see CHESED described as abundant, not measured out carefully or given sparingly, but poured out generously, even when we are slow to turn toward Him.

GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD, HIS LOVE IS EVERLASTING. Psalm 136:1

This verse begins a psalm that repeats this same line twenty-six times. God wanted His people to remember, over and over, that His mercy never runs out.

THE LORD’S LOVINGKINDNESSES INDEED NEVER CEASE, FOR HIS COMPASSIONS NEVER FAIL. THEY ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS. Lamentations 3:22 and 23

Written in the middle of great sorrow, this verse reminds us that no matter what season we are walking through, God’s mercy meets us fresh each morning. There is no morning we wake up outside the reach of His CHESED.

A Cry From The Heart

When I cry out to God with this one word, mercy, He reaches down to exactly where I am. He pours out His lovingkindness, His covenant faithfulness, His comfort, His security, and His love in great abundance. No measure of mercy is too great for God to give.

Here is what God tells us about mercy in His word.

THEREFORE LET US APPROACH THE THRONE OF GRACE WITH CONFIDENCE, SO THAT WE MAY RECEIVE MERCY AND FIND GRACE TO HELP US AT THE TIME OF OUR NEED. Hebrews 4:16

This is God’s invitation to come before Him with confidence. He wants to hear our needs and fill us with His mercy and grace.

Blessed Are The Merciful

Mercy is something all of us need and cannot live without. Have you asked your Father in heaven for His beautiful mercy in your life today?

Jesus tells us something remarkable about mercy: that it is not only something we receive, but something we are called to extend.

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, FOR THEY SHALL RECEIVE MERCY. Matthew 5:7

There is a beautiful cycle here. God pours His mercy into us, and as we walk in that mercy, we begin to offer it to others: the impatient driver, the difficult family member, the friend who let us down. And in that giving, we find we receive even more mercy in return. It is not a transaction, but a reflection of the heart God is shaping in us.

Living In God’s Mercy Today

Knowing about mercy is one thing. Living inside of it, day after day, is another. So what does that actually look like?

The truth is, God’s mercy is not something we have to unlock or earn through asking. It is poured over us continually, whether we ask for it or not. That is the wonder of CHESED. It flows from who God is, not from what we do to deserve it.

Think of how many mercies we walk in without ever stopping to notice them. The greatest of these is almost too wonderful to comprehend: our sins are forgiven. Not because we asked just the right way or prayed just the right prayer, but because God, in His covenant lovingkindness, chose to forgive. It cost Him. His son, Jesus, paid for them with His blood.

🌿 TIP BOX: Take a moment today to notice the mercies already surrounding you: forgiveness, provision, another day of grace. His mercies are new every morning, so you do not have to ask to receive them. God is already giving.

Still, we should come to the Lord and ask for His mercy, simply because He gives it freely. It draws us close to the God who is already giving it. When we cry out to Him, we become aware of what has been true all along, that His mercies are new every morning, and His lovingkindness has never once stopped flowing toward us.

There is something powerful about carrying scripture with us, not just reading it once and moving on, but tucking it into our hearts so it is there when we need it most. On the hard days, on the ordinary days, this verse reminds us that God’s throne is not one we approach in fear. It is one we approach in confidence, because mercy and grace are waiting for us there.

Oh, friend, we never have a complete picture of God’s character. But together, these two verses give us a true glimpse into the incomprehensible goodness of who He is, confident access to His mercy, and the promise that His mercy is renewed every single morning. What a gift to carry both in our hearts.
