How do we really know what God is like? It is a question worth sitting with. How can we truly know a God we cannot see? One of the most beautiful ways God reveals Himself to us is through His names. And one of the most awe-inspiring names in all of Scripture is this one: The Ancient of Days. Today let’s look at this breathtaking name and discover what it tells us about the God we love and serve.

Where Do We Find The Ancient Of Days In The Bible

The name Ancient of Days is timeworn, weighty, and absolutely beautiful. It first appears in the Book of Daniel, Chapter 7, and it is worth noting that it actually shows up three times in that chapter alone, in verses 9, 13, and 22. Each time it is used, it points to God as the sovereign ruler over all nations, all history, and all time.

Daniel was a young Hebrew man who was taken from his home in Jerusalem and carried off to Babylon as a captive. Even in a foreign land, surrounded by a pagan culture, Daniel remained deeply faithful to God. Because of that faithfulness, God blessed him with extraordinary wisdom and the remarkable ability to interpret dreams and visions.

The date is 553 BC. Daniel has a dream and a vision given by God about the Gentile nations of the world and His dealings with them. It is a dream of sweeping prophecy. And tucked inside that dream is a breathtaking glimpse into heaven itself.

What Daniel sees there is almost beyond words. But before we look at the scene he describes, let’s set the stage so we can fully appreciate just how magnificent this moment really is.

✝️ TIP BOX: If you want the full picture of Daniel’s vision, read all of Daniel Chapter 7. It is one of the most remarkable prophetic passages in the entire Old Testament and will give you rich context for this beautiful name of God.

The Heavenly Court Scene In Daniel 7

Let’s step into the scene Daniel describes. It is unlike anything else in Scripture.

In his vision, Daniel looks into heaven and sees thrones being set up and a court coming to order. This is not just any court. This is the divine courtroom of God Almighty, and He is about to administer judgment on the Gentile nations of the world. These are nations that had turned their back on God, were cruel and had little care for human life, treated Israel with contempt, and conquered in the most despotic ways.

And then Daniel sees Him. The Ancient of Days takes His seat.

Daniel 7:9-10 says:

I kept looking until the thrones were set up. And the ANCIENT OF DAYS took His seat; His vesture was like white snow, And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were burning fire. A river of fire was flowing, And coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were attending Him, And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; The court sat, And the books were opened.

What a scene! Daniel is reaching for every image he knows to describe something that is simply beyond human language. God’s clothing and hair shine so brilliantly that the only way to capture it is to compare them to the purest white things Daniel could imagine: snow and wool. It speaks of God’s absolute holiness, righteousness, and purity.

And the throne! Ablaze with fire, with wheels of burning flame. Fire throughout Scripture is a picture of God’s glory and His consuming holiness. The river of fire flowing out from before Him is the very presence of God moving to administer perfect and just judgment.

Thousands upon thousands of heavenly beings surround Him, ready and waiting to carry out His every command.

It is a scene of breathtaking majesty and holy power.

✝️ TIP BOX: When Scripture uses fire to describe God, it is always pointing to His glory and holiness. Think of the burning bush in Exodus 3, the pillar of fire in Exodus 13, and the tongues of fire at Pentecost in Acts 2. Fire is one of God’s most consistent and powerful symbols throughout the entire Bible.

What The Ancient Of Days Means

Now that we have seen the scene, let’s talk about the name itself.

Ancient of Days. Just say it slowly and let it settle over you.

It carries the profound meaning that God has lived through the entire course of human history. Every single moment of it. From the very first day of creation to this present moment and far beyond into eternity. He and He alone is the Ancient of Days.

The words “Ancient of Days” describe God as a firsthand eyewitness to every event, every deed, every decision made by every human being and every kingdom that has ever existed on this earth. He does not need a secondhand witness to fill Him in. He was there. He saw it all. He knows it all.

Think about what that really means.

This name encapsulates some of God’s most magnificent natural attributes in a single beautiful phrase. He is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere at all times. He is omniscient, meaning He knows everything completely and perfectly. And He is eternal, meaning He has no beginning and no end.

Because of all of this, God is a Judge who can administer a perfectly true and just judgment. He has lived through it all and has seen everything firsthand. There is no appeal, no missing evidence, and no miscarriage of justice when the Ancient of Days presides.

✝️ TIP BOX: The name Ancient of Days appears only in the Book of Daniel, but the attributes it describes- God’s eternality, omniscience, and omnipresence- are woven throughout the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation. These are not just theological words. They are deeply personal truths about the God who knows you completely and loves you anyway.

What The Ancient Of Days Reveals About God

Learning the name Ancient of Days does something wonderful. It pulls back the curtain just a little and gives us a deeper, richer picture of who God really is. And what we see is breathtaking.

He Is Holy

The blinding white of His clothing and hair in Daniel’s vision is not just a poetic image. It is a picture of God’s absolute moral purity. There is no shadow, no darkness, and no imperfection in Him whatsoever. His holiness is complete and total and unlike anything we have ever encountered in this world.

He Is Eternal

God exists outside of time entirely. He was not created. He has no beginning and He has no end. He simply is. That is almost impossible for our finite minds to grasp, and that is perfectly okay. He is meant to be bigger than we can fully comprehend.

He Is All-Knowing

As the Ancient of Days, God has witnessed every moment of human history with His own eyes. Nothing has been hidden from Him. Nothing has caught Him off guard. Not one single thing has ever surprised Him. He knows the end from the beginning and everything in between.

He Is Just

Because He has seen everything firsthand, His judgments are always perfectly right and perfectly fair. There is no bias, no blind spot, and no missing information. When the Ancient of Days opens those books, and the court sits, every judgment rendered is completely and utterly true.

He Is Incomprehensible

This is one of my favorite things about God. He is beyond our full understanding because His ways, His character, and His acts are so infinitely higher than ours. And rather than that being a frightening thing, I find it to be one of the most comforting truths in all of Scripture. I do not need to fully understand Him to fully trust Him.

✝️ TIP BOX: Isaiah 55:9 says, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” When God feels too big to wrap your mind around, that is not a problem to solve. That is a truth to rest in.

Why The Ancient Of Days Matters To You And Me

This is where it gets personal.

It would be easy to read Daniel’s vision and see it as a distant, ancient story about nations and judgments that have nothing to do with our everyday lives. But I think it has everything to do with our lives. Because the Ancient of Days is not just a theological concept. He is our Father.

And knowing who He really is changes everything.

When life feels out of control, remember that the Ancient of Days has seen it all before. Nothing happening in your life or in this world is a surprise to Him. He is not wringing His hands in heaven wondering what to do next. He is sovereign, He is steady, and He is completely in control.

When you feel unseen or misunderstood, remember that the Ancient of Days is a firsthand witness to every moment of your life. Every struggle, every heartache, every faithful step you have taken when no one else was watching. He saw it. He knows it. And not one moment of it has been lost on Him.

When justice feels far away, remember that the Ancient of Days is the perfect Judge. Every wrong will be made right. Every book will be opened. His judgments are true, and His timing is perfect, even when we cannot see it from where we stand.

This thought makes me want to weep. Not out of fear, but out of wonder. The God I call my Father is the Ancient of Days. He is too big for me to fully wrap my mind around, and I am so grateful for that. It means He is more than enough for anything I will ever face.

What an extraordinary God we serve.

✝️ TIP BOX: If the name Ancient of Days feels overwhelming, let it drive you to worship rather than worry. Psalm 46:10 says, “Cease striving and know that I am God.” The God who presides over all of history is the same God who holds your life in His hands.

The Ancient of Days. What a name, What a God

When Daniel caught that glimpse into heaven and saw the Ancient of Days take His seat on that blazing throne, surrounded by countless heavenly beings, he was seeing something that human words can barely contain. And yet God gave us that vision on purpose. He wanted us to know who He is.

He is holy. He is eternal. He is all-knowing. He is just. And He is personal.

The same God who presides over all of human history, who has witnessed every moment of every age, who will one day open those books and render perfect judgment, that God is your Father. He knows your name. He sees your life. And He loves you with a love that is as eternal as He is.

I hope that as we have walked through this beautiful name today, God has revealed a little more of Himself to you. That is always my prayer when we dig into who He is together. That we would leave knowing Him just a little better than when we started.

And that we would be blessed greatly by it.
