Welcome September! I’ve been waiting for you! September equals fall, and fall is my favorite time of the year! It really does not matter what the weather feels like. When the calendar flips to September, it’s fall every day, all day. There is so much to celebrate in September. So let’s get started. September is a great month to…

September, I’ve been waiting for you since last year!

Although it’s not officially fall yet, my internal fall calendar begins on September first! Here are 8 fall-filled, great ways to celebrate September around our homes and gardens…

Make A Fall Wreath

As the seasons shift, it’s the perfect time to take down your summer door wreath and craft something beautiful for early fall, like this Easy Leaf Wreath that anyone can make. Here’s a little secret: once you’ve gathered all your materials, this wreath can be completed in under 20 minutes, making it a quick and so satisfying project.

At the start of each new season, one of my rituals is to hang a new homemade wreath on my front door. It’s more than just decoration; it’s a way of bidding a warm farewell to the past season while happily welcoming the new one. I’ve been making my own wreaths for over four decades, and each one holds a special memory. Over the years, the front doors of four homes—two red, one blue-gray, and one taupe—have been decorated with my homemade creations.

When I take down last season’s wreath, if I don’t think I’ll use it again, I pull it apart and put all the fluff I used to make the wreath in clear plastic boxes according to their color. This keeps everything organized, saves money when I can use the same things again, and gives me lots of wreath-making options.

The fall wreath pictured above is one I’ve kept, and it’s a favorite of mine—second only to my beloved Indian Corn Wreath. I’ll make a fresh Indian Corn Wreath as soon as I can find some mini Indian Corn at a local farmstand. There’s something so satisfying about crafting a wreath that perfectly captures the essence of the season and welcomes family and guests with that touch of handmade charm on your door.

The Taste Of September

apple cake

At Tanglewood House, we love the seasons and celebrate it in so many different ways, especially when it comes to our meals. September is all about apples, the fruit that genuinely shines this time of year. I’ve shared my Delicious Raw Apple Cake recipe countless times because it’s one of the best things I make. Not only is it incredibly easy to whip up, but it’s also so scrumptious. The aroma of this cake, while it’s baking, fills the house with a warm, inviting scent that’s as delightful as the taste itself.

September also marks the beginning of soup season for us. As the days start to cool, there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming bowl of homemade soup. This month, I’ll be sharing a few soup recipes that I know will become family favorites. These soups are not just meals; they’re a way to bring everyone together around the table, enjoying the flavors and warmth that only a good, hearty soup can provide.

Get A Few New Candles

FALL VIGNETTE ON A COFFEE TABLE with a candle

Candles are essential for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere during the fall season. As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, the soft glow of candles adds a cozy ambiance to any room.

Think about choosing candles in rich, seasonal scents like spiced pumpkin, apple cinnamon, or warm vanilla for fall. These aromas fill your home with the comforting scents of autumn and help set the mood for relaxed evenings at home.

Place candles in strategic spots like your living room, dining table, or bathroom to bring a touch of fall into every corner of your home. Grouping candles of different sizes together can create a beautiful centerpiece, while single candles on a mantel or side table can add a subtle yet elegant touch.

Whether you prefer traditional pillar candles, decorative jar candles, or even battery-operated options, the gentle flicker and soothing scents of fall candles are sure to enhance the cozy feel of the season.

Get Your Porch And Patio Fall-Ready

September is the perfect time to get your porch and patio fall-ready. If your home is anything like mine, the changing of the seasons is a cue to tidy up our outdoor spaces. After a long summer, these areas need to be refreshed, especially since the spiders seem to take this time of year as an invitation to weave their webs in every corner of our windows and shrubs. Ah, the joys of country living!

While the weather is still warm and pleasant, let’s take the opportunity to give our porch and patio a thorough cleaning. Sweep away the cobwebs, wash down the furniture, and make sure everything is spotless. Once the space is clean, it’s ready for a touch of fall decorating and perhaps some fresh seasonal plantings to welcome the cooler months.

Set Up A Fall Coffee Bar

Setting up a coffee bar is one of my favorite seasonal traditions, and September is the perfect time to refresh this cozy spot in your home. Even if your kitchen is on the smaller side, you can carve out a charming nook dedicated to coffee, tea, or even a warm cup of apple cider.

To keep things simple yet stylish, start with a palette of early fall colors—think warm shades of amber, deep greens, or soft creams. These hues will set the tone for a welcoming and seasonal look. Stock your coffee bar with all the essentials, from your favorite coffee beans and teas to a bowl of crisp apples for a touch of fall freshness.

When you’re expecting company, elevate your coffee bar by adding a sweet treat like Delicious Raw Apple Cake or spiced pastries. I also love to add a little extra charm by tucking cotton napkins into the mugs and placing a few spoons in easy reach. This keeps things organized and adds a layer of thoughtfulness to your setup.

By creating a functional and inviting space, your coffee bar will quickly become a favorite spot for everyone to gather and enjoy the cozy comforts of the season.

Do Something Fall-ish Out Of Doors

September often brings warm, pleasant weather, making it ideal for getting outside and enjoying the last whispers of summer. Take advantage of the season by participating in local outdoor activities, such as craft fairs, apple festivals, corn mazes, sporting events, or even a lively tailgating party. These events capture the essence of early fall and offer a perfect way to spend time with family and friends.

One of the last tablescapes I created at StoneGable was the Fall Hydrangea and Green Apple Tablescape—a celebration of the season’s colors and textures. Here are some things you might find in your area to do…

Get Our Cozy, Textural, And Rich Textiles

fall pillows

As the weather starts to cool in September, it’s the perfect time to bring out those cozy, fall textiles that make your home feel warm and inviting.

Every fall, I enjoy adding a few new pillows to our decor that subtly hint at the changing season. The pillows on our family room sofa, for instance, are perfect for early fall. I selected most of them over the summer, with an eye toward how they would transition into autumn.

One of my favorites is the sunflower pillow, which adds a beautiful touch of fall to the room. You can take a closer look at it HERE.

If you’re looking to refresh your space for the season, I encourage you to find a couple of pretty pillows or throws that bring that cozy fall feeling into your home. September is an ideal month to start shopping for and displaying your fall pillows. Whether you’re drawn to rich textures, warm colors, or seasonal patterns, these small additions can make a big impact in creating a welcoming atmosphere for the season ahead.

Add Fall Scents To Your Home

FALL SIMMER POT

When I think of fall, I immediately envision the warm, inviting aromas that define the season—cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, apple, and orange. These scents evoke a sense of coziness and comfort, making any space feel homey!

One of the easiest ways to fill your home with these delightful fall aromas is by creating a Simmer Pot. A simmer pot is simply a mix of your favorite spices, fruits, and herbs simmered gently on the stove, releasing their fragrances throughout your home. Not only does this method diffuse beautiful scents, but it also adds a touch of warmth and charm to your kitchen.
