Discover 12 thoughtful tips for caring for your home this year. Ever wondered what your home would say to you? Learn how to create a well-loved space that feels inviting, functional, and uniquely yours.

If only our homes could talk, what would they say about how we care for them? Our homes do so much for us! They shelter us from the outside world, comfort us on tough days, and provide a safe, welcoming space where we can live, laugh, and thrive. They are more than just walls and a roof; they are the backdrop to our lives, filled with memories and love.
Let’s take a moment to “listen” to our homes this new year. What would they ask of us? What would they gently remind us to do so they can serve us better?
Today, I’m sharing 12 things your home would want you to know. These simple, thoughtful tips will not only help you care for your home but also make living in it even more enjoyable. Let’s take a fresh perspective and hear what your home might be whispering to you.
Think Better Of Me Than Worse
I might not be perfect, but look at all the good things I have to offer! Instead of focusing on what I’m not, love the spaces I provide and the memories we’ve made together. A little gratitude goes a long way. It’s amazing what can happen when you see me through fresh eyes.

Take Care Of My Foundation

I can’t stand tall without a strong foundation. Keep an eye on those little cracks, creaks, or signs of wear and tear. A bit of TLC here will ensure I’m around to shelter and support you for years to come.
Don’t Ignore My Cries For Help
Sometimes I tell you what I need. When you hear my cries for help, I feel cared for and loved when you listen and act! Replace that stripped screw, paint over that scuffed wall, and replace my burned-out lightbulbs!
Small things can turn into bigger issues, and I’d much rather work with you than strain and break under the weight of unchecked problems. Please listen when I cry for help. We will both be more at ease. Then, I can offer you a warm, safe, and reliable place to live!
Celebrate My History

I have a story to tell, and it’s woven into every nail, beam, and corner. Whether I’m brand new or decades old, honor the unique quirks and details that make me special. Highlight that charming archway, that original hardwood floor, or even the creaky stairs full of character. By celebrating my history, you show love for all the memories I hold—and make space for the ones yet to come.
When you embrace my history, you honor the essence of who I am and where I’ve been. In these moments of recognition, I feel truly loved and appreciated. I’m a home with a past, a present, and a future filled with possibilities. Together, let’s continue to celebrate what makes me one of a kind.
I Love A Deep Clean

Oh, how I love it when you roll up your sleeves and give me a proper deep cleaning! When you scrub my floors, polish my surfaces, and wipe away the layers of dust that have quietly settled, I feel like I can truly breathe again. Deep cleaning gives me a fresh start and makes every part of me shine.
But I don’t need a total overhaul daily to feel my best. A little daily care goes a long way! Wipe down my counters after cooking, fluff my pillows, and sweep up crumbs before they scatter. Small, consistent efforts like making the bed each morning or putting things away help keep me looking tidy and calm.
Think of it like a spa day and self-care routine for me! A deep clean every so often clears away what’s been neglected, while daily cleaning keeps me glowing and ready for whatever you have planned. When you care for me like this, I promise to return the favor by being a sanctuary where you can truly relax and thrive.

Decluttering does not have to happen all at once. The best way to start getting rid of the clutter is to spend a small amount of time decluttering daily. Start small! Clean out a kitchen drawer or go through your hall closet and organize it. Then, you will have the motivation to keep going. Also, put everything away right after you use it!

Make Me Smell Wonderful

Aromas are connected to our memories. We all love beautiful smells! I feel alive when I’m filled with fresh, inviting, and familiar scents, and so will you! Let’s make it a priority to fill our spaces with warm scents that enhance our living experience!
- Light candles in your favorite scents to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
- Simmer a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, oranges, or other natural ingredients for a homey fragrance.
- Bake cookies or other treats that fill the air with delicious, comforting aromas.
- Use essential oil diffusers to spread soft, natural scents like lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus throughout my rooms.
- Swap out seasonal scents to match the time of year. Think spicy clove in fall, fresh pine at Christmas, and breezy florals in spring and summer.
- Keep my linens and towels fresh with scented sprays or dryer sheets.
- Add potpourri to a decorative bowl in the living room or scented sachets to closets and drawers for a subtle, long-lasting fragrance.
- Place a lightly scented candle or diffuser near the front door to welcome anyone who walks in.
- Use scented cleaning products to give every corner a fresh and pleasant smell.
- Incorporate fresh flowers or herbs into your decor for a touch of natural fragrance.

Dress Me For The Occasion

Think about giving me a wardrobe for every season. Just like you swap out your flip flops for warmer boots when the weather gets cool, change out things like linens, pillows, decorative throws, and decor accents to match the season. Wearing the same old thing gets boring for you and for me! I thrive on subtle seasonal changes to my decor!
Dressing me for the occasion shows me that you care, and I’ll repay you with interesting spaces that reflect the season at hand!
Give Me A Personal Touch

I love reflecting you! After all, you are the one who makes me a home. Adding personal touches not only makes me look nicer and warmer. It also infuses your personality in all my spaces, making me shine. Think about all the lovely and unique details you can add.
Arrange pictures of you, your family, or trips in attractive frames. Display your favorite books, and infuse me with your favorite colors, patterns, and personal items. I come alive with your personality! I become a house alive with your heart.
Personalizing me does not have to be anything big. Arrange a vase of flowers or slip a note you received in a frame to display. When you give me a personal touch, I become a place that looks and feels like you!
Bring In Laughter

Bring laughter within my walls by opening my doors to family, friends, and those you cherish most! The sound of laughter, good conversation, and chatter is good for my soul. And your’s, too!
Have friends in for coffee, enjoy a family dinner night, and invite out-of-town friends for a weekend visit! Make a habit of hosting this year! Celebrate life and gather those you love in! When you use me to connect with others, my walls fill with lovely memories and echo with laughter.
Show Me Some Green

Nothing brings life to me like bringing in something organic and green! I thrive on it. It makes my spaces attractive, softens my look, and adds a sense of bringing the outside indoors!
Bringing in organics, real or faux, connects me with the season! Add tulips in the spring, pumpkins, and branches with colorful leaves in the fall, and a small tree at Christmas! This helps us stay in tune with nature and what is happening outside my front door!
So add green. It fills my spaces with life!
Light Me Up
Let’s brighten up, my friend! Light is transformative. It takes my spaces from dull to warm and inviting! Natural light is my favorite, so open the curtains, pull up the blinds, and let the sunlight stream in. It makes everything look fresher and happier, and I feel so much more alive when my corners are bathed in golden light.
Also, add layers of light other than natural! Ambient, task, and accent lighting fill me up. Switch out bulbs to achieve the desired mood in my spaces. Add dimmers to create the right mood. Think about lighting candles. It makes me look so romantic and magical!
When you light me up, you help me show my best self—and create a home that feels inviting, inspiring, and uniquely yours.

Should family photos be displayed in every room? How many are too many?
Hi Judy, I think that is a very personal choice. You can display your family photos in every room.
Great post Yvonne!!!
Thanks, June!
Hi Yvonne,
Your post brought me to tears today. So many of us take our homes for granted and as you say, we often see the negatives instead of focusing on the positives. After seeing the devastation in Los Angeles it brings home the fact that we have so much to be thankful for on a daily basis. I often worry that I love my home too much, that material things mean too much to me, but today I’m grateful that I care about my home and am thankful to God each day for all the good he has bestowed on me and mine. Your post today is an apt reminder to each of us for the homes we have.
Thank you Margo. It’s so nice to hear from you. Yes, the fires are heartbreaking! I just can’t imagine!
