  • Pick late-summer flowers and display them.
  • Use eucalyptus stems for a fresh green accent.
  • Dry hydrangeas and arrange them in a nubby basket.
  • Decorate with dried wheat or grasses in vases.
  • Make an arrangement with early fall leaves.
  • Plant herbs in pottery.
  • Put real or faux apples or pears in a bowl.
  • Replace bright blooms with mums or dahlias.
  • Plant assorted ornamental cabbages together in a plastic-lined basket.
  • Plant fall mums indoors. Buy them when the flowers are just starting to bloom.
  • Fill a small vase or creamer with bittersweet or fall berries.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fall Decorating

When is the best time to start decorating for fall?

There’s no strict rule. It’s all about what feels right to you. You could begin a gentle transition as early as mid August, embracing a soft, warm color story and a few early fall accents. A safer, relaxed start is just after Labor Day or early September, which gives you room to savor summer while gently inviting autumn in. If you’re drawn to cooler air, crisp mornings, or grabbing that first mug of cider, let that be your signal. It’s your home, and your instincts matter most.

How do I transition from summer to early fall decorating without going full-on autumn?

Think of it as easing into a sweater rather than pulling on a coat. Swap out bright summer textiles for richer tones like amber, olive, or muted rust. Trade beachy vases for amber glass, introduce dried eucalyptus or wheat stalks, and add cozy throw blankets. These small shifts create a gentle autumn glow without feeling like you’ve leaped into pumpkin overload.

How can I decorate for fall without using pumpkins?

You can create a beautiful fall look without a single pumpkin by focusing on other seasonal elements. Bring in natural textures like dried hydrangeas, wheat stalks, or eucalyptus. Use earthy colors. Think rich browns, golds, deep greens, and muted reds, in pillows, throws, and table linens. Add warmth with candlelight, amber glass, brass accents, and soft lighting. Incorporate seasonal fruits like pears or apples in a pretty bowl, display fall-inspired artwork, or fill vases with branches and autumn leaves. These details give your home a cozy, unmistakably fall feel—no pumpkins required.

  1. Lovely! I wish they made the Crate and Barrel money plant wreath in a smaller size as 32” is way too big for my house. Thank you for all the ideas and encouragement.

I usually fail at DIYs, especially anything involving a glue gun or decoupage glue! The orange slices might be right up my alley! Thank you…I love all of your experimentation notes!

    1. I hope you will give them a try! I LOVED drying these and plan to make a dried orange garland for fall and the holidays.

      1. I think my favorite breakfront display is the rosy, pink, green hydrangeas in the basket, if they are real, how did you preserve, if not where did you purchase the faux ones, love you classey decorating . Thank you

        1. They are real. 5 beautiful bushes line our front walk. The hydrangeas are called “Ruby Slippers”. They begin white and then get bright pink splotches on them (so interesting) that spread and then they become a beautiful red. They were ready to pick to dry, so I just put them in a basket.
