What’s Your Superpower? How God Designed You To Shine

Discover how God gave you unique gifts and talents to use for His glory, and why your superpower matters more than you think.

This morning, I really did not want to write a post. I was tired, it was dark outside, and my bed felt so wonderfully cozy. After a little debate in my head, I dragged myself up, shuffled to my quiet study, and here I sit, asking God to fill me with His Holy Spirit so He would be glorified on this page and on this blog.

I think blogging is the best job in the world. It is mostly a joy, even on early mornings like this one when my bed feels too good to leave.

I am not saying there are no frustrations, glitches, and long days, but blogging is in my wheelhouse, my sweet spot. It uses so many talents that come easily to me, and I enjoy it more than I can say. For me, it feels almost second nature. It is my superpower. Not bragging, just being truthful.

I am often asked, even by my own mother, “How do you do it? Where do you get your creativity?” And my first answer is always the same. God. Really.

Ephesians 2:10 says: “For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

God has gifted every one of us with talents, aptitudes, skills, and all the things we are naturally good at. He is the giver of our superpowers.

When Something Just Does Not Come Naturally

When I was young, I took piano lessons for five and a half very l-o-n-g years. It was a painful experience for everyone involved. Although I can read music and play a little, I became nervous the moment I sat down at a piano. It is more of a chore than a pleasure, for me and for anyone within earshot.

For years, I started practicing Christmas carols in September just so I could pick out a few tunes to play on Christmas morning. As much as I tried, wished, practiced, and studied, the piano was simply not a natural fit for me. And singing? Let us just say that when God was giving out musical talent, I was not anywhere near that line.

But I did show up early to stand in line for other gifts.

Just think about what comes easily to you, and what you enjoy. You must have been in front of that line. These are your God-given superpowers! God, in His great wisdom, has created us to excel at something. Actually, many things!

You Are God’s One-of-a-Kind Masterpiece

Some of us are brilliant or deeply creative. Some are merciful, or gifted problem solvers, or natural teachers. Some are diplomatic, artistic, or wonderfully encouraging. The world needs every single one of those gifts, including yours.

There are things that you and I can do with ease and real joy. There are also things we might manage to get through, but they feel like the heaviest kind of chore. That did not happen by chance. Think about the things you find easy, the things you are genuinely above average in. Where did those come from? Our families can nurture our gifts, for sure, but God is the true giver of every one of them.

And here is the part that still takes my breath away.

God knew you, planned for you, thought you out, and gifted you before you were ever born.

You Are His Workmanship

Ephesians 2:10 says that YOU ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP.

The Greek word for workmanship is POIEMA (poy-ay-mah). It means a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. You are a masterpiece. It also conveys the idea that you are God’s poem to the world. Can you hear the word poem in POIEMA?

God gave you your talents and all that is you so that you would thrive in them. And when people ask you why you are so good at something, the best answer you could ever give is simply… God.

He has blessed you with gifts not to squander on self-seeking pleasures or to tarnish with sin, but to magnify Him and show Him to the world.

Putting Your Gifts to Work

Years ago, I stopped writing this blog for a few months. It felt like a kind of loss I was not prepared for, and for a while, I was not sure I would ever come back to it. I felt strongly that God was not pleased with how I was using my gifts, and, more honestly, with how I had started caring more about my blog than about Him.

And he was right. He is always right. So in an act of obedience, I put the blog away. Some of you may remember that season. It was hard, but it was exactly what I needed.

It was during that quiet time that God spoke clearly into my life through His Word. He was, is, and will always be first. And I had not been putting the Giver of my gifts in that place. As you can see, He restored the blog, and I am more grateful for it than ever. I am also far more careful now about how I use what He has given me.

It really is all about God.

How are you using the talents and natural gifts God has given you? Can you imagine if we all used them to be the best at what we do, not for ourselves but to glorify God?

When we use our gifts to show God to the world, it’s a win-win experience. We are doing what we are good at, what comes naturally, and what we are made to do! And we are using them so others can see our great Creator’s work! We are His masterpieces!

Let your superpowers shine by doing the good works God has given you long before you were born. And in doing so, glorify God!

This is a verse worth thinking about…

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE SO BEFORE MEN, THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS AND GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN. Matthew 5:16.

So use them well, use them often, and use them with a grateful heart. The world needs your superpower, and God is glorified every time you share it.

        1. I just saw this today Charo as I am reading Yvonne’s devotional (11-21-21) and I am so happy for your friend and for you. God is so amazing and I know He hears our prayers. I feel Him everyday and I am so at peace knowing how much He loves us and all the blessings He gives us. God has His own timing for everything. Scriptures that remind us that certain seasons will ultimately come, they do encourage us to trust Him—and part of spiritual maturity is learning to trust God’s timing. I always say it’s no coincidence when a writing like this comes into my life as I know it is God talking to me through you………..and for that I thank you………..there are definitely talents I know I have, and others I wished I did (like singing!). Growing up on country music, it was no surprise, I wanted to be a country music singer! However, I’m not meant to be a singer, so I focus on the other gifts that have been given to me instead. 🙂

Thanks, Yvonne, for this wonderful post. It really spoke to my heart! I know that I sometimes fail to use my gifts for His glory. How we need to be mindful of doing this.

May God continue to bless you, Yvonne. You are such a blessing to us and we thank God for the gift He has given us in YOU!

  11. Thank you once again, Yvonne for your encouraging words. For very legitimate reasons I’ve not been looking forward to hosting thanksgiving this year. But cooking and entertaining has always been a talent so because of your reminder, I’ll bow to Gods will and try to find peace in my heart while cooking for my family and friends.

  12. Thank you so much for this post today! God’s timing is always perfect. I have been dealing with metastatic breast cancer for the last year and have completely trusted in God to carry me along.
One of my gifts is being positive and always hopeful and I pray that I may pass this along to others. I pray I will use this battle to glorify God and share the hope and peace that only comes from Him!

Love your blog and your Sunday posts particularly! God bless you for being a shining light for Him!

    1. God bless you Debra! We need more godly positive people on this world! Praying for you!

  13. Thanks for sharing this morning, I know about those morning when you just don’t want to move. I’ve often in the past thought about what my superpower might be. Now, not so much. I’m good at many things and I thank God for the talent but the enthusiasm is not what it was in my younger years. Thank you for your always wonderful articles, I enjoy reading them so much.

I so needed this this morning! Thank you for your obedience! It is a light! This week I will be returning to the public school to teach God’s Word in Good News Club through Child Evangelism Fellowship. It will require following all COVID mandates and the call to go in is overwhelming but out of obedience we must share the gospel where God opens doors. Thank you again.

  19. We are more than conquers, once AGAIN you have honored our LORD by pushing past the enemies intended detours !!

  20. You bless me! May God bless you!!

  21. Debbie Atchley says:

Once again Yvonne you speak truth. All talent is God given and regardless of what your talent is it is to be used for His glory. I used to think He gave me somewhat odd talents. But I use them to bring others joy. It is He who created me to be who I am so I am called to glorify Him in using them. There has been other times He has stretched me to show me and use me in talents I did not see in myself. And like you I tried the piano and singing…….that just wasn’t meant to be lol.

  22. Lillian D. Matthaei says:

I look forward to your Sunday blog.

    thank you for sharing.

    Lillian

  23. Gayla Greer says:

    Yvonne,
I am so grateful that you got out of bed and wrote this wonderful post. It has inspired me to continue using my gift of teaching and service to others even tho I feel I am getting too old to serve. I have been following you for so long and I enjoy all of your creativity, talent, and your gift of designing a space and making it so warm and welcoming. I love your walk with the Lord and how you magnify His name through His Word and your testimony each Sunday. You are truly a shining light! I have been wanting to visit Lancaster in the Fall, so maybe one of these days we can meet!

  24. Thank you so much for this post. It is such an encouragement to me.
At 71, I believe that Hod has called me to do many new things, totally out of my comfort zone. I have lead a women’s Bible study group for the last 9 months at our church and soon I will be singing a solo that I truly felt God wanted me to learn. While these things are a stretch, I am confident that I’m doing exactly what He would have me do.
My encouragement to others is that it is never too late to allow God to bring new things in your life to bring Him glory.
