How To Create A Beautiful Front Door For Summer With Simple Tips That Last All Season
Create a beautiful front door for summer with simple decorating tips, easy wreath ideas, and ways to keep it fresh all season.

There is something about a pretty front door that sets the tone for your whole home. It is the first thing you see when you come home, and the first impression guests have when they visit. And the good news is, it does not take a lot of time to make it look fresh and inviting for summer.
I like to keep things simple and use what I already have, moving pieces around and giving them a new purpose. You will often see the same wreath or basket repurposed in different ways, and that is one of my favorite decorating shortcuts. A few thoughtful changes can make your front door feel new again without starting from scratch.
In this post, I am sharing easy ways to create a beautiful front door for summer, from cleaning and polishing the basics to adding a wreath or a fresh flower basket. I will also show you how to hang your door decor the right way and how to keep it looking good all season long.

If you are ready for a quick update to your front door that makes a big difference, this is a great place to start.
How To Create A Pretty Front Door For Summer
Creating a pretty front door for summer does not have to be complicated. In fact, a few simple steps can make such a big difference.
I like to think of this as giving your front door a quick refresh. When the basics are clean and cared for, adding one beautiful element makes your whole entry feel more welcoming.
You do not need to buy a lot or start over. Most of the time, it is about using what you have and giving it a little attention.
Start With A Clean Door And Sidelights

Before you add anything to your front door, take a few minutes to clean it. This is the easiest way to make your entry look better right away.
Wipe down the door and trim, paying attention to any dust or smudges. Then clean the sidelights and glass so they sparkle in the sunlight. It is amazing how much brighter everything looks when the glass is clean.
I try to do this every time I change out my door decor, and it always makes everything I hang look even prettier. I also spend a little time at least monthly to give my door and glass a little clean-up.
Make Your Front Door Hardware Shine
The hardware on your front door may seem like a small detail, but it really matters.
Take a minute to wipe down the handle, doorknocker, and kickplate. Removing fingerprints and dull spots helps everything look fresh and well-cared-for.
If your hardware is starting to look worn, a quick polish can make it look almost new again. It is one of those little things that make your front door feel finished.
Choose One Beautiful Focal Point
When it comes to decorating your front door, simple is always best.
Choose one focal point, either a wreath or a door basket, and let it be the star. This keeps your door from feeling cluttered and helps everything look more pulled together.
I like to pull apart my wreaths, keeping all the elements and repurposing them again, every new season. Moving things around and styling them a little differently is an easy way to keep your front door looking pretty and up to date without buying anything new.
Easy Summer Wreaths You Can Make
A wreath is one of the easiest ways to make your front door look pretty for summer. It adds color and interest in a simple, uncomplicated way.
You can absolutely use a wreath you already have and give it a little update. I do that often by fluffing it, adding a few stems, or changing a ribbon. But sometimes it is just as nice to make a new wreath, especially if you are ready for something a little different.
The wreaths Iโm sharing here are all easy to make and don’t take much time. You may need to pick up a few supplies, but each one is simple and well worth the effort.

This post tells you my favorite and easiest way to style a front door basket.
Before we hang a wreath on the door, here are a few simple tips that can make it look even better.
Simple Wreath Tips That Make A Big Difference
If you want your wreath to look a little more like something you would find in a shop, a few simple tricks can make a big difference.

- Wire two grapevine wreaths together for more fullness
This is one of my favorite tricks. It gives your wreath more depth and makes it look fuller and more substantial on your door. You can wire the same-size wreaths together, or put a slightly smaller one on top of the other to show off more of the beautiful grapevine. - Use zip ties to secure larger elements
Zip ties hold heavier stems in place so they do not shift over time, and once trimmed, they are not noticeable. - Start with one clear focal point
Choose one area of your wreath to stand out a bit more. This helps guide the eye and keeps the design from looking scattered. - Use a simple, well-defined color palette
Sticking to a few colors helps your wreath look cohesive and intentional instead of busy. - Mix different textures
Combine florals, greenery, and a few natural elements to add more interest and depth to your wreath. - Fluff and shape your wreath as you go
Taking a minute to adjust stems and spread things out helps your wreath look balanced and finished. - Make your wreath full
A fuller wreath almost always looks better on a front door. Do not be afraid to add a few extra stems to give it more presence. - Choose a wreath that is in proportion to your door
A wreath with a little more size and presence will always look better than one that feels too small.
How To Use Ribbon To Make Your Wreath Or Basket Look Beautiful

A beautiful ribbon is one of the easiest ways to make a wreath or door basket look more finished and styled.
A simple bow can add just the right amount of detail without making things feel busy. It is an easy way to bring in a little pattern or color and give your front door a more polished look.
Choose A Ribbon That Works With Your Door

Think about the color of your door and the look you want to create.
I often reach for a signature black-and-white French-striped ribbon or a neutral ribbon with a simple stripe because it works with almost everything and adds interest without taking over.
Make A Full, Well Shaped Bow

A generous bow makes a big difference.
Do not be afraid to make it a little larger than you think. A fuller bow has more presence and helps your wreath or basket stand out on the door.
Take a minute to adjust the loops and tails so everything looks balanced.
Let The Ribbon Add Structure

Ribbon can help anchor your design.
Whether it is tied at the top of a wreath or wrapped around a basket, it helps bring everything together and gives your arrangement a more finished look.
Keep It Simple
One beautiful ribbon is usually all you need.
Too many ribbons or patterns can make things feel busy. Keeping it simple helps your front door look more pulled together and intentional.
How To Hang A Wreath The Right Way

Once you have a wreath you love, hanging it the right way makes all the difference. A wreath that is placed well looks balanced and intentional, while one that is too high or too low can feel a little off.
The goal is for your wreath to sit at eye level and feel centered on your door.
Use A Wreath Hanger For An Easy Option
A wreath hanger is one of the simplest ways to hang a wreath. It slips right over the top of your door and takes just seconds to install.
This is a great option if you like to change your wreaths often or do not want to make any permanent changes to your door.
Choose one that works with your hardware so everything looks coordinated and pulled together.
Front Door Tip: Protect Your Door From Scratches: If you use a wreath hanger, it can rub against your door and leave marks over time. An easy fix is to add something soft where the wreath touches the door. You can hot glue a small piece of felt to the back of the wreath or tuck a bit of foam padding behind it. This keeps your door from getting scratched and helps your wreath sit more securely. You can also choose a padded hanger or one with a protective backing when buying a new one. It is a simple step, but it can save your door from wear and tear.
Try A Ribbon For A Softer Look
Hanging a wreath with a ribbon gives your front door a softer, more styled look.
If you are hanging your wreath with a ribbon, there is an easy way to keep it in place and looking neat.
Run the ribbon over the top of the door and secure it to the inside top edge. You can use a thumbtack or a strong piece of tape to hold it in place.
This keeps the wreath from slipping and helps it stay right where you want it. It is simple to do and works especially well if you like the softer look a ribbon gives your front door.
Use A Command Hook For A Clean Look
If you want your wreath to look like it is floating on your door, a Command hook is a great choice.
Place the hook on the door according to the package direction, then hang the wreath so the hanger is hidden. This gives a clean, uncluttered look.
Use A Small Hook For A Secure Hold
If you want your wreath to stay exactly where you put it, a small screw is a very reliable option.
We have a couple of screws driven directly into our door to hold a hook, which keeps the wreath secure and perfectly positioned. You can see the top of it in the image above. It does not shift when the door opens and closes, and I do not have to adjust it every time I walk by. We have used a hook to secure our wreaths in our last three homes for over 32 years.
This works especially well for heavier wreaths or if your front door gets a lot of use.
Choose a hook that attaches with small screws and blends with your door color so it is not noticeable. Once it is in place, you will likely never need to think about it again.
Hang Your Wreath At The Right Height
Where you place your wreath matters more than you might think.
A good rule is to hang it at eye level, usually just a little above the center of the door. If your door has panels or windows, use those as a guide to help center the wreath. In all honesty, I don’t always follow this tried-and-true rule. So do what I say and not what I always do.
Step back and take a look before you finish. A small adjustment can make everything look more balanced.
A Fresh Alternative, A Summer Door Basket
If you want something a little different on your front door, a door basket is such a beautiful option.
It has a softer, more relaxed look than a wreath and works especially well for summer. A basket filled with flowers or greenery adds texture and a bit of charm that feels welcoming without being overdone.
I love using a door basket when I want something simple but still pretty. It is also easy to change out as the season goes on.
Summer Hydrangea Door Basket

A hydrangea door basket is one of my favorite ways to decorate a front door in the summer.
Hydrangeas have a full, generous look that fills out a basket beautifully. I use faux stems, and I don’t mind that they are not the best quality as long as they’re sturdy, since they will get quite a bit of outdoor wear.
This arrangement has a relaxed feel and looks lovely against almost any door color. It is a simple way to add a little color and make your front door feel welcoming.
Patriotic Red, White, And Blue Front Door Basket

If you want to add a little seasonal charm to your front door, this red, white, and blue basket is such a fun option.
It is especially meaningful this summer as we celebrate Americaโs 250th birthday. The mix of colors feels festive yet simple enough to use all season long.
This basket is easy to put together and can be made with faux stems and greenery. It is a great way to add a little color and personality to your front door without making things feel overdone.
How To Hang A Door Basket
Hanging a door basket is very similar to hanging a wreath.
You can use a wreath hanger, a ribbon, or even a small hook or screw to keep it secure. Keep the basket centered on your door and hang it at about eye level so it looks balanced.
Simple Tips To Make Your Front Door Look Finished
A pretty front door is not just about the wreath or basket. It is the little things around it that make everything feel complete and welcoming.
Once your main piece is in place, take a few minutes to review the entire entry. A couple of simple additions can make your front door feel more pulled together without adding clutter.
Add One Meaningful Detail

Sometimes it is one small detail that makes a front door feel complete.
Adding a doorknocker, a kickplate, a nameplate, or even a decal can give your door a more finished look. These pieces act like jewelry for your front door, adding a bit of character without needing anything else, except a wreath or basket.
Choose something that works with your homeโs style and your existing hardware so everything feels cohesive. The image above is of our front door at StoneGable. The hospitality pineapple plate on the door came from Charleston, SC. Again, I saw one like the one above on a beautiful home, and I have to find one for ours.
You do not need to add all of these. Just one thoughtful detail can make a big difference.
Add A Simple Welcome Detail

A small welcome detail can make your front door feel warm and inviting.
I added a simple welcome decal to my front door, and it made such a difference. It’s a fun, sweet welcome for family and friends, and they often mention how much they like the little “hello” greeting. It is subtle, but it gives the door a finished look without needing anything extra.
At our StoneGable home, I added a letter P decal, for our last name, to the left sidelight. I saw this done on a trip to Savannah Ga, and could not wait to add it to our home.

If you would like to add one to your door, I have a post that walks you through exactly how to apply it so it looks neat and lasts.
Keep It Balanced And Uncluttered
When decorating your front door, less really is more.
Try to keep things balanced and not too busy. One focal point, like a wreath or basket. If you add anything else, keep it simple so everything works together.
Stepping back and looking from a distance can help you see whether anything feels out of place.
Look At Your Door As Part Of The Whole Entry
Your front door is part of a bigger space, not just a standalone feature.
Think about what sits around it, like your doormat, planters, lanterns, or a place to sit. Keeping these elements simple and coordinated helps your whole entry feel welcoming and well cared for.
How To Keep Your Front Door Looking Good All Season

Once your front door is looking pretty, a little upkeep will help it stay that way all summer.
The good news is, it does not take much. A few simple habits will keep everything looking nice and well cared for without a lot of extra work. I love to throw on a straw hat over my bedhead and some easy clothes, and spend the first 20 minutes of the day on my porch and raise my bed gardens- of course, with a cup of coffee in hand. This is a glorious way to start the day and keep things tidy outside. It’s also a lovely way to connect with God first thing.
Front Door Tip: Keep A Duster Handy: One of the easiest ways to keep your front door looking nice is to keep a small duster nearby. I like to keep a Swiffer close by so I can quickly dust the crevices in my door, the ledges, and even my wreath. It only takes a minute, but it keeps everything looking clean and well cared for. This is one of those simple habits that makes a big difference over time.
Keep Your Wreath Or Basket Looking Nice
Take a minute every few days to fluff and adjust your wreath or basket.
Stems can shift, ribbons can move, and things can start to look a little uneven. A quick straightening and reshaping will keep everything looking full and in place.
Easy Cleaning Idea: I usually do this when I come in or out of the house. It only takes a minute and makes such a difference.
Protect Your Door Decor From Weather
Summer weather can be hard on door decor. If your front door gets a lot of direct sun, you may notice fading over time. Rain and wind can also take a toll. If a storm is coming, it is a good idea to bring your wreath or basket inside until the storm is over.
If that is not practical, just check it afterward and make any quick adjustments so everything still looks neat.
How To Keep Birds From Nesting In Your Wreath Or Basket
Birds love a cozy spot, and a wreath or door basket can look like the perfect place to build a nest.
To discourage them, keep your wreath or arrangement full so there is no easy space to tuck nesting materials. I also like to gently move or fluff my wreath every day or two so it does not feel like a stable place to settle in.
If birds are especially persistent, here are a few simple things you can try:
- Use a natural bird-repellent spray designed for outdoor use. These are easy to find and can help keep birds from settling in. See it HERE.
- Tuck a small plastic snake or frog into your wreath for a short time. I like to hide a small snake where it is not visible to people, but birds will notice it.
- Add a small strip of foil behind the wreath or basket. The reflective light can discourage birds from getting too comfortable.
You do not need to do all of these. Just one or two can make a big difference and help you avoid finding a nest where you do not want one.
We have had robins build a few nests in our wreaths over the years. When that happens, I enjoy giving refuge to the mama bird and watching the eggs hatch until the babies are big enough to fly away. The wreath and door can be a bit of a mess, but watching the process and sharing it with my kids, and now my grandkids, is so worth it.

Simple Answers To Common Front Door Decorating Questions
If you are working on your front door for summer, you might have a few questions. Here are some simple answers to help you achieve a beautiful result without overthinking.
A wreath that is about 20 to 24 inches works well for most standard doors.
If your door is larger or has wide panels, you can go a bit bigger so it does not look too small. I like a wreath that feels in proportion to the door and has enough presence to be noticed.
I usually step back and take a look before I call it done. That quick check always helps me get it just right.
Both are beautiful, so it really comes down to the look you like best.
A wreath gives a more classic look, while a door basket feels a little more relaxed. You really cannot go wrong with either one.
I like to switch between the two depending on the season or my mood, and it keeps my front door feeling new without much effort.
A good rule is to hang your wreath at about eye level, usually just a little above the center of the door.
If your door has panels or glass, use those lines as a guide to help center it. A small adjustment up or down can make a big difference in how balanced it looks.
I always take a step back and look at it before I finish. That final check makes all the difference.
Keep it simple and focus on one main element.
One wreath or one basket is usually enough. If you add anything else, keep it minimal so everything works together. I stretch this rule a bit. I think a kickplate is such a nice addition that adds a custom look, but does not call attention to itself.
I remind myself that a few well-chosen pieces always look better than too many things competing for attention.
You do not need to change it often to keep it looking nice.
A small update at the start of the season and a few little adjustments along the way are usually enough. Even something as simple as fluffing a wreath or adding a ribbon can make it feel new again.
I like to work with what I already have and just give it a little change now and then.

A pretty front door does not have to be complicated to feel welcoming and well cared for. With a few simple steps and one beautiful focal point, you can create an entry that greets you and your guests in the best way every time you come home.
Remember the simple formula we talked about: THINK about the look you want, DECIDE on one main element, and DO a few small things to pull it all together. That approach makes decorating feel easy and enjoyable instead of overwhelming.
Use what you have, make a few thoughtful changes, and do not be afraid to try something new. Sometimes the smallest updates make the biggest difference.
I hope these ideas help you create a front door you love all summer long.
Happy summer decorating, friend…
