4 Quick And Easy Summer Dining Room Centerpiece Ideas You Will Love

Four quick and easy summer centerpiece ideas for your dining room table using a simple basket and beautiful seasonal botanicals.

Summer Centerpiece-white hydrangeas in the dining room

One of the nicest things about summer is the natural beauty it offers us to bring inside our homes. This summer, I am leaning into a relaxed, organic, and pretty approach to decorating. Seasonally simple is my summer motto! Our dining room sits right in the heart of our open concept home, so a beautiful centerpiece there makes a real difference in how the whole space feels.

I love decorating with baskets in the summer. There is something so easy and natural about them. So I grabbed a basket that was just the right size for our round dining room table and started thinking about how to fill it with beautiful summer botanicals.

The best part of these arrangements, besides the fact that they come together almost effortlessly, is that they work beautifully on any flat surface that needs a little focal point. Think foyer table, coffee table, bookcase, or even a bathroom counter.

Today, I am sharing one summer basket centerpiece done four different ways. Each one is simple, seasonal, and so pretty!

Grab A Basket

Baskets are one of the most versatile and charming accent pieces you can have in your home. They add texture, warmth, and a layer of natural interest to any space, and they work beautifully in every season.

When choosing a basket for a centerpiece, proportion and scale matter most. You want it to feel intentional on your table, not too small that it gets lost, and not so large that it crowds the space.

🌿 TIP BOX: A good rule of thumb is to choose a basket that is roughly one-third the width of your table. That proportion feels balanced and leaves enough breathing room for everything around it.

The basket I am using is one I normally use for books. It is sturdy, has a pretty braided woven design, and has cutout handles on the sides that add a nice detail. It is not a perfect basket for a centerpiece, but it works beautifully, and that is part of the charm. Use what you have!

Summer Basket With Houseplants

This summer basket centerpiece idea started with a visit to my favorite local Amish greenhouse, just a couple of miles down the road. I was looking for something fresh, easy, and natural to bring to our dining room table, and I knew I would find it there.

A basket filled with easy-to-care-for houseplants felt just right for summer. Plants bring such a living, breathing quality to a space, and there is something so quietly beautiful about greenery on a dining room table.

Our dining room gets wonderful natural light, so I knew whatever I chose would thrive with just a little watering and attention.

I chose three Swedish Ivy plants for the basket. Swedish Ivy is such a pretty, easygoing plant with soft, trailing vines that spill over the edges of the basket in the loveliest way. To keep things simple and practical, I left the plants in their nursery pots and tucked small bowls underneath each one to catch any extra water. Nothing leaks into the basket or onto the table that way.

🌿 TIP BOX: If you plan to keep a plant centerpiece all summer, consider transferring your plants into aged terracotta pots. They look so much more intentional and beautiful than nursery pots, and they add another layer of natural texture to the arrangement.

Summer Basket With Geraniums

It did not take long before I started thinking about how pretty a few blooming annuals would look tucked into the basket on the dining room table. I use annuals throughout our home all summer long. They are one of my favorite and most affordable ways to bring seasonal color and life indoors.

So I headed back to the Amish nursery and came home with three beautiful white geraniums. White is such a clean, fresh choice for summer, and it works with almost any color palette in a room.

Geraniums are wonderfully forgiving and will last for weeks indoors with just a little care and bright light. I always think of them as long-lasting cut flowers that just happen to still be in their pot!

To soften the look and add a little airiness, I tucked in another summer annual with delicate, lacy blooms. That combination of full-round geranium heads and wispy filler gives the basket such a pretty, natural feel.

🌿 TIP BOX: When using blooming annuals indoors, choose a spot with bright indirect light and water them when the top inch of soil feels dry. They will reward you with weeks of beautiful blooms.

Like the Swedish Ivy arrangement, I kept all the plants in their nursery pots with small bowls underneath to catch any water. You can see the edges of the pots peeking through the basket’s handle openings, and honestly, I do not mind that one bit. It is part of the charm.

Pick your favorite summer annual, or mix a few together, and enjoy their beauty right at your table all season long.

Summer Basket With Showy Cut Flowers

Adding cut flowers to a basket makes for one of the most beautiful and effortless summer centerpieces you can create. There is just something so naturally elegant about a basket overflowing with blooms on a dining room table.

Our oakleaf hydrangeas are just starting to bloom out in the garden, and I cannot wait to cut a few and use them in this exact arrangement very soon. Fresh from the garden to the table is about as seasonally simple as it gets!

But in the meantime, I reached for some of my favorite faux blooms. These real touch white hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful and so convincing. If you did not know they were faux, you would never guess it.

To arrange them, I cut the stems down and placed the hydrangeas into three mason jars nestled inside the basket. The jars keep the flowers upright and help them spread out naturally, giving the arrangement a full, lush look without any floral foam or complicated technique.

🌿 TIP BOX: Using several small containers, like mason jars or bud vases, inside a basket is a simple trick for keeping cut flowers or faux stems beautifully arranged. It also makes swapping out blooms quick and easy whenever you want a fresh look.

I also have faux white peonies on the way, and I am already so excited to give them their turn in the basket. Peonies and hydrangeas together in a summer basket? That is going to be so pretty.

Whether you use fresh flowers from your garden, blooms from the market, or beautiful faux stems, a basket filled with cut flowers is one of the quickest and easiest summer centerpieces you can make for your dining room table.

Love this basket idea! I use faux florals and have a number of “house plants” in pots, so will definitely try pulling them together in a basket sometime this summer. Thanks!

  2. Yvonne,
You will love those faux hydrangeas. I received both shades of green last week and the quality is amazing and realistic. I have all ten in an urn in my bay window above my kitchen sink. I finally changed out the dried ones from our previous home that I gingerly moved to our rightsized home last year. It was bittersweet but I have to say the tones of green remind me of my previous homes hydrangeas before they were dried. Would love to know what you think of them????

    1. The faux hydrangeas are the most realistic looking and feeling hydrangeas I have every used. And the price is amazing!

  3. I love these ideas…and it never occurred to me to use annuals inside…which other annuals besides geraniums would you recommend to use as decor in the house?

Yvonne, I love all of your basket arrangements you have made for your dining room table. You always do a wonderful job with all your floral arrangements! My favorite is the one you made with the white hydrangeas. I love hydrangeas and have the same ones. Friends have to go up close and check them out. They can’t believe they are faux! I also love your basket with your white geraniums — so beautiful. Your wicker basket is so pretty. I also like the set of scalloped baskets that you listed. I think I might need to order this set. I really like scallops on baskets. Thanks, Yvonne, for your lovely ideas. Have a blessed week!
