7. MAKE THIS WITH ME: One of my favorite things we’ve ever added to our home is a kitchen window box herb garden. Being able to snip fresh parsley, rosemary, thyme, and chives right from the kitchen window is fun, charming, and practical.

• How do you remove a piece of pasta from a pot of boiling water to test whether it is done? Use chopsticks to pluck a piece out.
• How do you chill a glass of wine without watering it down? Freeze grapes and use them instead of ice cubes.

9. CULINARY CORNER: Don’t waste the last bits of food like jam, pesto, or mayonnaise in the bottom of a jar. Use it to make a quick vinaigrette. Add vinegar, oil, salt, and pepper. Shake the jar well to mix. Pour over your salad for a burst of flavor, or use it as a marinade. This simple trick turns scraps into a tasty dressing.
