Sometimes a kitchen just needs a few new things to look fresh and updated. You do not have to remodel or even repaint to give it a little boost. Just adding or styling a few pretty things can make a real difference in how the space feels every day.
A kitchen works hard. It is where meals come together, where homework gets done, where morning coffee happens before anyone is quite ready to be awake yet. With all that daily use, it is easy for a kitchen to start feeling more functional than fabulous. The good news is that bringing it back to life does not require a big project or a big budget.
These kitchen decorating ideas are simple and quick, requiring little time or effort. From clearing your counters to adding a little warmth with a lamp or fresh herbs, each idea here is meant to be doable in minutes, not a weekend.
Here are 12 quick kitchen decorating ideas that give your kitchen an instant updated look, no remodeling required.
Clear Your Counters First
Before adding a single pretty thing to your kitchen, take a few minutes to clear off what is already there. A styled tray or a vase of flowers cannot do its job if it is competing with mail, mismatched appliances, or things that do not belong on the counter in the first place.
Start by taking everything off your counters, even if just for a few minutes. Put back only what you use daily or what you plan to style intentionally. Everything else gets tucked into a drawer, cabinet, or pantry where it belongs.
This step alone makes a noticeable difference. A clear counter gives your eye somewhere to rest, and it makes every idea in this post look even better once you add it back in.
🌿 TIP BOX: Keep a small basket or bin nearby while you clear counters. Anything you are not sure about yet can go there for a week. If you never reach for it, you will know it is safe to store away for good.
Hang a Piece Of Art

Art in the kitchen might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it can make a real difference in how the room feels. A well-placed piece gives your kitchen personality and warmth. It can be as simple as a framed print, a small oil painting, or a charming vintage find. Try hanging art on a blank wall, or lean it against the backsplash or an open shelf for a casual, collected look.
We recently hung a large botanical picture over our stove. I had been thinking about filling that blank space for quite a while. I love botanicals, especially ones with an Audubon feel, and this picture fills the space beautifully while working with our color palette too.

Dishes look right at home hanging on a kitchen wall as well, adding charm, color, and a bit of vintage appeal. This one takes a little more time than the other ideas here, since it usually involves collecting pieces and finding the right plate hangers, but the payoff is worth it. Our grouping is still a work in progress, and honestly, that is part of the fun.

Choose something that reflects your style or complements the colors already in your kitchen. Even one pretty piece can draw the eye and give your kitchen that lived-in, loved look.
🌿 TIP BOX: If you are hanging art near the stove, choose a piece with a glass front rather than an open canvas. It wipes clean in seconds if it ever catches a little cooking splatter.

Add A Lamp To The Counter

Adding a lamp to your kitchen counter is one of the easiest and most charming ways to update the space. Look for a small lamp that fits neatly in a corner of the counter, and choose one with a pretty base or an interesting shade that works with your kitchen’s color palette. A plug-in sconce works well too if counter space is limited, and if you do not have an outlet nearby, battery-operated light bulbs with a remote control are a simple workaround that let you add a lamp almost anywhere.
My favorite part of having a lamp in the kitchen, aside from its decorative purposes, is the warm glow it gives off in the evening and at night. It makes the whole kitchen look cozy and inviting.
The small lamp with the gingham shade lights up a dark corner on my counter, and it also casts a nice glow that carries into our dining area, sunroom, and living room. It has become such a cozy addition to our kitchen.

🌿 TIP BOX: A lamp on a timer or smart plug turns itself on right as the evening light starts to fade, so you get that cozy glow without having to remember to flip a switch.
Add Flowers And/Or Potted Plants

Living things like cut flowers from my garden or potted plants are my favorite, easy go-to way to make my kitchen feel that much more special. A vase of flowers or a little potted plant adds life and color to any kitchen. It is such a simple thing, but it makes a big visual impact. Fresh flowers are always lovely, but a good faux arrangement or a potted plant can look just as beautiful and last even longer.
The zinnias in our garden are riotous right now. Enjoying them in the kitchen brightens both the kitchen and my day.

Place flowers or a plant near the sink, on the kitchen table, or next to the stove where you will see them often. They soften the hard surfaces in a kitchen, making the whole space feel more lived-in and welcoming.
🌿 TIP BOX: If fresh flowers are not in the budget every week, a single stem in a small bud vase still makes an impact. Even one bloom placed with intention can carry a whole counter.
Add Fresh Herbs As Decor

Of all the things I bring into my kitchen, the herbs cut from our garden are my favorite. They smell wonderful and fresh, right at my fingertips when I am cooking. I like to grow herbs in pots once the herbs in the garden are done, so I never have to go far for a fresh sprig.
Herbs bring a different kind of life to a kitchen than flowers do. They look beautiful in a small pitcher or mason jar, and they serve a purpose too, ready to snip the moment a recipe calls for them. A little pot of basil, rosemary, or parsley near the stove or on the windowsill adds greenery and makes cooking feel a little more special.
Herbs are also wonderfully low-maintenance compared to a full flower arrangement. A quick trim and a splash of water keep them looking fresh for days.
🌿 TIP BOX: Group two or three different herbs together in matching small pots or jars for an instant collected look, rather than scattering single stems around the kitchen.
Restyle Your Shelves- Open or Glass Front

Whether your kitchen has open shelves or glass-fronted cabinets, both give you a chance to turn everyday dishes into decor. Open shelves put everything on full display, while glass fronts offer a softer, slightly more polished version of the same idea.
This is an area I love to decorate with a seasonal nod, selecting dishes, glasses, serving pieces, and other kitchen items to display. My glass cabinets are more of a decorative display, adding color and interest to my white kitchen.
If you have open shelves, group items by color or type for a tidy, intentional look: stack plates on one side and a collection of pitchers or bowls on the other. If you have glass-front cabinets like mine, use them to show off pretty dishes or collections you love without worrying about dust or keeping everything perfectly neat.
Either way, rotate a few pieces with the seasons. Swap in a stack of colorful plates for summer, or a favorite collection of pitchers for fall. It keeps the space feeling fresh without any real effort.
🌿 TIP BOX: Do not feel like every shelf needs to be full. A little breathing room between stacked dishes or serving pieces actually makes a display feel more curated and less cluttered.
Create A Vignette For A Large Counter Or Island
If you have a larger open space, like an island or a long counter, try styling a vignette to add interest and create a focal point. A vignette is simply a small arrangement of decor grouped together with intention that tells a story. Start with a base like a tray, cutting board, or basket, then layer in other items, especially ones found in a kitchen.

I love creating vignettes in any area of our home, but my favorite place is the kitchen island. Most of the vignettes I do in the kitchen have a seasonal bent, making the whole kitchen feel like the season at hand.
I have a corner on my island that doesn’t get much use, so it is the perfect spot for a vignette. It can be seen from the living room, dining room, sunroom, and, of course, the kitchen, so it does a lot of heavy decorating lifting.
The limelight hydrangeas by our front walk have just started to bloom, and they are a very welcome part of this kitchen vignette right now. My number one rule for creating vignettes is to put them together quickly and not take them too seriously.
If your island serves as more of a workhorse for meal prep and gathering, a smaller vignette tucked into one corner still adds charm without getting in the way. For more ideas on styling that space specifically, see my full guide, What To Put On A Kitchen Island.
🌿 TIP BOX: Keep your vignette to three or four items at most. Odd numbers and varied heights make a small grouping feel effortless rather than staged.
Decorate With Dish Towels

Decorate With Dish Towels
Pretty dish towels are one of the easiest ways to bring color, texture, and even a little style to your kitchen. They are inexpensive, functional, and easy to switch out. Choose towels that match your kitchen’s look, then fold or drape them neatly over the sink, an oven handle, or a hook.
One way to add color to our kitchen is by lining the baskets I use for vignettes or by keeping my coffee station from getting too spread out with pretty kitchen towels. I keep those towels separate from the ones I use to dry the dishes, so they stay nice for a long time.
Try using dish towels to repeat a color you already have in your kitchen. It is such a small touch, but it helps pull everything together and gives the space a finished look.
I have a stack of dish towels that work with my kitchen’s color story and use to decorate. When I need a little color or an extra layer of decor, I grab one or two and style them. Done.

🌿 TIP BOX: Choose towels in a slightly heavier woven cotton or linen rather than thin terry cloth for styling. They hold a fold better and look more like intentional decor than a forgotten kitchen towel.
Display Your Cookbooks

If you love to cook or bake, bring out a few of your favorite cookbooks and let them become part of your kitchen decor. Cookbooks stacked neatly or propped on a stand can be both beautiful and useful. Choose books with attractive covers and use them to repeat colors you are already using in the room.
I like to open a favorite cookbook and put it on a cookbook stand, open to a favorite recipe, especially if it includes a delicious-looking picture.
A few well-placed cookbooks add warmth and personality, and remind everyone that your kitchen is a place where good food and good memories are made.

🌿 TIP BOX: Tuck a small stack of cookbooks under a cutting board or beside a vignette rather than always displaying them upright. It adds height variation and keeps the grouping from looking too matchy.
Style A Tray Or Basket With Kitchen Essentials
Trays and baskets are a smart and stylish way to organize everyday kitchen items. Choose a tray or low-sided basket and group together items you use often, such as olive oil, salt, pepper, a pepper mill, and a small potted plant or candle. This keeps your counters tidy while still looking thoughtfully decorated.
Baskets play a very important role in my kitchen because it is white. They add a lot of warmth and texture, and they work hard corralling items next to my stove and in my coffee station.
The key is to choose practical items and arrange them so they look intentional. Grouping items on a tray also makes it easier to clear the counter when needed. It is one of those little things that makes your kitchen feel put together.
I am a huge fan of keeping a few cooking essentials right next to my stove. I often use a large white platter to hold all the items. I like to keep a crock of wooden utensils, salt and pepper urns, a salt pig, olive oil, and something seasonal.

🌿 TIP BOX: Line a basket with a simple cloth napkin or tea towel before adding items. It softens the look, protects the basket from spills, and gives you an easy way to change the color story with the seasons.

Use Seasonal Decor
One of the easiest ways to keep your kitchen looking current and fresh is to change out a few small things each season. A bowl of lemons or a vase of garden flowers in the summer, mini pumpkins in the fall, or a small evergreen in a crock at Christmas gives your kitchen a pretty seasonal touch without much effort.
Flowers and herbs in the kitchen are signs of midsummer. I keep a small crock of fresh herbs near my workstation.
Keep it simple. A few small seasonal changes help your kitchen feel warm and inviting all year long, and you probably already have a few things on hand you can use.
🌿 TIP BOX: Store a small basket or box of seasonal decor pieces near your kitchen items, not tucked away with holiday decor across the house. When everything you need is close by, you are far more likely to actually make the swap each season.
A Few More Ideas To Try

Sometimes it just takes one small change to make a kitchen feel refreshed. If you want to do a little more or try something different, here are a few more easy ideas that can quickly update your space, all things you can add or do in just a few minutes.
- Switch out a kitchen rug or runner for something washable and colorful
- Display a bowl of seasonal fruit on the counter or table
- Add a small stool or bench near a counter or island
- Lean a cutting board or bread board against the backsplash
- Use matching jars or canisters for flour, sugar, or snacks
- Add a new candle or diffuser with a clean, kitchen-friendly scent
- Use a pitcher to hold cooking utensils instead of a traditional crock
- Update the soap dispenser or dish soap bottle with something prettier
A few small decorating touches can go a long way in making your kitchen feel fresh and pretty. Try one or two ideas at a time and see what works best in your space. When your kitchen looks updated and thoughtfully styled, spending time there is even more enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Trends change fast, but timeless kitchens stand the test of time. Stick with simple, classic cabinet styles (like Shaker), mix finishes thoughtfully, and lean toward white, neutral, or deep tones like navy or black if you want color. Add visual interest with layered accessories, textiles, and plants that you can swap out over time instead of full renovations.
A few decor missteps can take away from a beautiful kitchen. Avoid overly bright or clashing colors, mix‑and‑match hardware, and fake decor like artificial fruit or plants. Instead, choose authentic textures and stick to a gentle palette. And remember, good lighting really pulls the look together.
Always let function lead the styling. A kitchen works best when everyday items are easy to reach and visually appealing. Think layered displays like trays, stacked cookbooks, or utensil crocks. Keep pathways clear, and allow surfaces to serve multiple purposes while still looking pretty. Even styling can serve workflow.

Happy decorating, friends…

Good Morning
Yes you are right…. I recently hung a new picture up under the cabinets that was all that was needed and changed a few things on top of counters and kitchen was refreshed I do this on a regular basis because the kitchen always feel cleaner and I get bored with things……Thank You for the other ideas.
Good for you Eva! I could hardly believe how the picture above my stove changed the look of our kitchen.
How did you safely hang your artwork?
Hi Brenda, it really depends how big and heavy the artwork you want to hang is and what you are hanging it on. It’s so important to know these things to find the right hangers.
Great ideas, loved it. Can you write some ideas on how to hang not only art but odd things like your plate wall, I love it.
Hi, I love all of your decorating ideas and many times I have seen pictures over a stove , I would love to do that but I wonder about the clean up with all the splatters when cooking, how often do you do clean that area, would you do that on a daily basis?
Once in a while the artwork gets a splatter. I just wipe off the glass and frame.
Can you please give me the link to the plate hangers you use?
Yvonne, I really enjoyed your post! You have given us so many ideas — and I thank you! Your kitchen is so beautifully decorated. I, too, enjoy using pictures and lamps. It just adds so much. Have a blessed week! Thanks, again for being special you! We just appreciate you so much!
You are so sweet, Mary Ann! xo
I too am wondering about the type of hook used over your stove. I have the same backsplash and I don’t know what type of hanger would be best for that type of material. I know the weight of the artwork would be a consideration. Can you put a link to the one you used? Thank you!
My husband screwed a hook he had into the grout. The picture is not that heavy. Hope this helps.
Hi, do you have a link to the blue flowered chinoiserie utensil crock? It is stunning!
Here you go, Pam: https://on.ltk.com/+uNGYOCjxdorXy_7JcEjO0w
how did you hang the picture above your stove, on the tile?
We put a hook into the grout and hung the picture.
I love your range hood…white with the lighter wood. Was that handmade or did you purchase it somewhere?
It is beautiful and blends so well with your kitchen/dining area.
It was custom made when we updated our kitchen.
