Did you know you have a virtual interior design store right at your fingertips every single day? Your home is filled with hidden treasures just waiting to be rediscovered and used in fresh, creative ways.

Decorating can get expensive, and it is easy to feel stuck when a room starts to feel tired. Shopping your house removes that pressure. It helps you slow down, look at what you already have, and use it in new ways that feel personal and comfortable.

With a little creativity and a fresh set of eyes, familiar pieces can feel brand new again. I am sharing eight easy ways to shop your house and use what you already have to refresh and welcome your home.

How To Shop Your House For Decor

Shopping your house does not have to feel overwhelming or messy. In fact, a little bit of intention makes the whole process easier and much more enjoyable.

I like to keep things simple and focused, so decorating stays simple and doesn’t turn into pulling out all your decor at once.

Here is the easy way I shop my house.

  1. Start with one room or even just one surface, a table, a shelf, or a corner that feels tired.
  2. Walk through your home and gather a few pieces that might work: trays, vases, lamps, pillows, books, or baskets.
  3. Keep the color palette simple and cohesive so the pieces work together naturally.
  4. Style in layers, something tall, something medium, and something low.
  5. Step back, take one thing away if it feels busy, and stop there.

This approach keeps rooms from feeling cluttered and helps you make confident decorating decisions without second-guessing every choice.

Shop The Kitchen

Did you know you have a virtual interior design store right at your fingertips every single day? Your home is filled with hidden treasures just waiting to be rediscovered and used in fresh, creative ways.

The kitchen is one of the very best places to start shopping your house. It is full of pieces that are both useful and pretty, and many of them work just as well in other rooms as they do in the kitchen.

One of my favorite things to use throughout the house is a pedestal cake plate. I reach for them again and again because they add instant height and interest without feeling fussy. Cake plates are one of those items that earn their keep.

I also use a set of partridge salt-and-pepper shakers as decor in my living room. Sometimes they sit on the coffee table, other times on a small drink table. They are simply too pretty to tuck away when not in use.

Take a look inside your cabinets with fresh eyes. Serving pieces, bowls, and small accessories often make beautiful decor when they are moved out of the kitchen.

Here are a few easy ways to shop your kitchen.

  • Use cake plates as risers
Cake plates are perfect for candles, small plants, or decorative objects. They add height without taking up much space.
  • Stack cups or bowls in a vignette
A simple stack of bowls or cups adds charm to a shelf, buffet, or side table.
  • Repurpose serving platters as trays
Large platters work well for corralling candles, books, or everyday items on a coffee table or dresser.
  • Use small bowls for organization
Small bowls are great for holding keys, jewelry, or little essentials while still looking pretty.
  • Hang dishes as wall decor
A grouping of plates can create an interesting wall display and add personality to a room.
  • Stack plates to add height
A small stack of plates used as a riser can lift a decorative object and lend a display more presence.
  • Use glass jars and containers
Fill them with seasonal items or greenery and use them as simple accents on shelves or tables.
  • Lean cutting boards as backdrops
Cutting boards add warmth and texture when layered behind other decor.

Your kitchen holds so many decorating possibilities. A quick look through your cabinets might be all it takes to refresh another room in your home.

Bring The Outdoors Inside

One of the easiest and most natural ways to shop your house is by bringing the outdoors inside. Nature offers some of the prettiest decorating elements, and many of them are already right outside your door or tucked away in your garage or garden shed.

You do not need a large garden or lots of flowers to make this work. Simple clippings, natural textures, and well-loved garden pieces can add warmth and character to a room in a way that feels relaxed and comfortable.

Just a handful of blooms was enough to make a statement. I have also used a gathering basket from the garden as a container for a dried hydrangea arrangement, and it is one of my favorite ways to bring a bit of the garden indoors.

Here are a few easy ways to bring the outdoors inside.

  • Clip flowers and greenery from what you have growing
Flowers from pots, shrubs, or flowering trees make simple, beautiful arrangements.
  • Use branches and stems for height
Tall branches or leafy stems add structure and interest to a room.
  • Bring in garden containers
Terracotta pots, small planters, and garden urns work beautifully as indoor accents.
  • Use gathering baskets indoors
Garden baskets make wonderful containers for flowers, dried stems, or even folded throws.
  • Create small arrangements
A single stem or a few clippings in a small vessel can be just as pretty as a full arrangement.
  • Use seasonal garden elements
Evergreens, seed pods, dried grasses, or clipped branches naturally reflect the season.
  • Mix real and faux pieces
Faux stems add fullness while real greenery brings in movement and life.
  • Do not overlook small details
Even one leaf, sprig, or garden tool can add charm to a vignette.

You do not need much to make this work. A few natural elements and garden pieces used indoors can make your home feel softer, warmer, and more inviting.

Move Furniture And Other Decor Around Your Home

This may be my favorite way to shop my house. furniture into rooms where it was never meant to live. This simple shift can completely change how both the piece and the room feel.

Moving furniture and decor from one room to another can completely change how a space feels. Often, the pieces you already own work just as well, if not better, in a new spot.

Some of the most interesting changes come from moving smaller, everyday pieces. A dining chair placed in a foyer creates a welcoming place to set a bag or pull on shoes. A side table from the living room can work beautifully as a bedside table in a bedroom. Even something as simple as moving a bench or stool to a different room can make the space feel refreshed.

Soft furnishings are also easy to move and often overlooked. A set of curtains from a bedroom might work perfectly in a family room, especially if the color and fabric already fit the home. Rugs, lamps, mirrors, and baskets are also worth trying in new rooms.

Here are a few easy places to use seasonal items you already have.

  • Style seasonal accents on bookshelves
Small objects, greenery, or framed pieces add a subtle seasonal touch.
  • Add seasonal decor to entry tables
A simple vignette sets the tone as soon as you walk in.
  • Use greenery or florals on a mantel
Branches, stems, or garlands work beautifully here.
  • Change a centerpiece or table runner
One small change can instantly refresh a dining space.
  • Add seasonal touches to the kitchen
Mugs, dish towels, or a small arrangement go a long way.
  • Swap hand towels or small accents in bathrooms
These little changes are easy and noticeable.
  • Update bedrooms with pillows or throws
Seasonal textiles help a room feel current and comfortable.
  • Decorate porches or patios for the season
Wreaths, planters, or cushions finish the look.

Moving pieces around this way keeps decorating relaxed and personal. It helps you see your home with fresh eyes and often leads to simple changes that make a big difference.

Paint Or Refinish

One of the simplest ways to shop your house is with paint. A fresh color or new finish can completely change how a piece looks and how it works in your home.

Paint is a wonderful problem solver. It can help an item blend in, stand out, or finally feel like it belongs. Sometimes, all a piece needs is a little update to make it useful again.

I once spray-painted an ugly, bright yellow garden stool a handsome gunmetal color. Once the color was changed, it became a small drink table next to a chair in our living room. That one simple change gave the piece a whole new purpose.

If something feels tired or out of place, think about what a new finish might do. Larger pieces can be painted to better fit your rooms, while smaller items are perfect candidates for a quick spray-paint update.

Here are a few easy ways to refresh pieces with paint or refinishing.

  • Paint furniture to fit a new space
Dressers, chests, or tables can feel completely different with a fresh coat of paint.
  • Refinish worn surfaces
Sanding and staining can bring warmth back to tables and chairs that have seen better days.
  • Spray paint smaller accents
Picture frames, candlesticks, lamps, and garden stools are easy to update with spray paint.
  • Update hardware
Painting or replacing knobs and pulls can make a surprising difference.
  • Use paint to unify mismatched pieces
A single color can help unrelated items feel like they belong together.

Paint is one of the most budget-friendly tools you can use when shopping for your house. It allows you to work with what you already own while giving your home a fresh, pulled-together look.

Use Items That Reflect The Season

Before buying new seasonal decor, it is always worth taking time to look through what you already own. Shopping your house for seasonal pieces often leads to rediscovering favorites tucked away.

Seasonal items do not need to be elaborate to make an impact. A few well-chosen pieces placed in the right spots can quietly signal the season and make your home feel thoughtful and welcoming.

I have used the same large fall leaf stems throughout our home for years. They have shown up in many rooms and in many different ways, and each time they feel just as special. Pieces like that may cost a little more up front, but their ability to be reused year after year makes them worth holding on to.

  • Style seasonal accents on bookshelves
Small objects, greenery, or framed pieces add a subtle seasonal touch.

  • Decorate porches or patios for the season
Wreaths, planters, or cushions finish the look.

Using seasonal items you already own creates a sense of continuity in your home. Familiar pieces bring comfort, memories, and a feeling of ease that new decor often does not.

Decorate With Books You Already Have

Books are not just meant to be read. They are also wonderful decorating tools, and chances are you already have plenty of them around your home.

Books add color, texture, and personality to a space. They tell a quiet story about who lives in a home and what matters there. Whether they are stacked, leaned, or tucked into a vignette, books have a way of making a room feel more lived-in and comfortable.

Using books you already own is an easy way to shop your house. A small stack of books can add height to a coffee table or nightstand. Books can also help anchor decorative objects and make arrangements feel intentional rather than random.

Here are a few easy ways to decorate with books you already have.

  • Stack books to add height
Use books under a lamp, vase, or decorative object to give it more presence.
  • Use books on coffee tables
A small stack creates a simple focal point and anchors other decor.
  • Mix books with decorative objects
Pair books with framed photos, pottery, or greenery on shelves.
  • Group books by color
Arranging books by similar colors creates a softer, more cohesive look.
  • Turn books backward for a neutral feel
Display books with the pages facing out for a quieter, layered look.
  • Use books in vignettes
Books work beautifully on entry tables, mantels, desks, and nightstands.
  • Style books on bedside tables
They add both function and a lived-in feel to bedrooms.

If you like a more cohesive look, covering books in a neutral material is another option. Burlap-covered books work beautifully in many homes and can still be enjoyed as reading material. You can see how I do this in How To Cover Books With Burlap, and you might also enjoy Decorating With Books You Already Have And Love.

What should I look for when shopping my house?

Focus on versatile items like trays, books, pillows, lamps, baskets, small tables, artwork, and seasonal decor. These pieces are easy to move and often make the biggest impact. Also, search for items that fit well with the color palette of other things you already have in a room.

How do I keep things from looking cluttered?

    Yvonne,

Shopping your house is very inspiring. I wish I was as adventuresome as you with regard to switching furniture around. I think I will take a serious look around our home for some new inspiration. Thank you.

  2. Your blog is always so interesting. Thanks for sharing your home.

  3. I love this post, because I get hairbrained ideas for using things in weird ways. That work out & are way cool! My best is an old plantation sugar kettle that we purchased at an auction several years ago. about 2′ high, 4′ across, all rusted, etc. Heavy heavy heavy! We used it outside for a few years in a front bed of our country house, as a cool decor piece. Then we built a new home & I decided to use it as a centerpiece in our living room! One of our son’s friends welded a steel base for it to sit on, I bought a round wood base for under that, stained the wood the same as the floor so the wood disappears. Then I bought a beveled round glass top. It is so unique & cool! It was a crazy idea to purchase the darn thing in the 1st place, to haul it home, then what to do with it?! And to bring it INSIDE? ha ha ha
