Starting the new year with healthy morning habits can set a calmer, more purposeful tone for the days ahead.

Happy New Year. I do not make long lists of resolutions, but I do like using January as a gentle reset. Last year was full and busy, and I felt the need to slow things down and be more thoughtful about how I begin each day. Small, healthy morning habits have a way of shaping everything that follows, and they feel doable rather than overwhelming.

I am sharing twelve simple morning habits that have helped me, and that I am continuing to work on myself. This is not about perfection or packing more into the morning. It is about starting the day with intention, caring for yourself well, and creating a simple morning routine that supports the rest of your day.

Healthy morning habits are simple, intentional things you do at the start of the day that help you feel better, think more clearly, and move into the day with purpose.

Wake Up Early And At The Same Time Of Day

ALARM CLOCK

Having a consistent bedtime and wake up time is one of the best things you can do for your body. Waking up a little earlier allows space for a simple morning routine before the day begins, rather than rushing straight into it.

As tempting as it is, skipping the snooze button really does help. Hitting snooze often leaves you feeling groggy and rushed instead of rested, which sets a stressful tone before the day even gets going.

Wake up and greet the day.

My husband is a great example of this habit. He goes to bed and gets up at the same time every day, even on weekends, and he follows the same quiet morning routine before work. I call it puttering, but it works. That steady rhythm gives him time to ease into the day and feel prepared for what is ahead.

Drink Water

PITCHER OF LEMON WATER

Reaching for water first thing in the morning is a simple habit that makes a big difference. After going all night without drinking anything, your body needs to rehydrate before that first cup of coffee.

Warm water with lemon or mint is often recommended because it is gentle on the body and easy to drink first thing. It helps wake everything up without feeling harsh. Reaching for water first thing in the morning is a simple habit that makes a big difference. After going all night without drinking anything, your body needs to rehydrate before that first cup of coffee.

Lately, I’ve been going to bed with a tall glass of lemon water that I drink before I get out of bed in the morning.

Listen To Inspiring Music

This one has been a stretch for me. I am a bit of a newshound, and my habit has always been to turn on the news first thing in the morning. Lately, I have been trying something different, and I am surprised by how much I like it.

I created a Pandora station called Instrumental Music To Wake Up To, and it feels like a kinder way to start the day. The music is calm but uplifting, and it gives my mind a chance to wake up without immediately jumping into headlines and noise.

Choosing music that feels encouraging or peaceful can change the tone of your morning in a very simple way. It is nice to let music fill the house, even early in the day, and it feels like doing something good for yourself before the day gets busy.

Make Your Bed

MIRRORED ARMOIRE WITH A BED REFLECTED IN IT

This is a big one, and it really does matter. Making your bed each morning is a small habit, but it creates a sense of order right away. It is a simple way to start the day by finishing something, and that feeling tends to carry on.

I grew up hearing this from my mom, and as it turns out, she was right. Making the bed sets a quiet tone of care and intention, even on busy mornings.

I used to make my bed every single day without thinking about it. Somewhere along the way, I let this habit slip a bit, so this is one I am very intentionally resetting. It does not take long, and it makes the bedroom feel pulled together, which is always a good thing.

Shower In The Morning

SHOWER

Taking a shower in the morning can be a great way to fully wake up and start the day feeling refreshed. It helps clear away sleepiness and creates a natural transition from rest to activity.

I have read that showering in the morning can be helpful for skin because it washes away what builds up overnight, and it just feels clean and energizing. Even a quick shower can make a difference in how alert and ready you feel.

For me, it is less about length and more about the routine. Stepping into the shower first thing helps signal that the day has begun, and that small ritual sets a positive tone moving forward.

Get Dressed And Put Your Shoes On

WOMAN PUTTING ON SHOES

This is a habit I learned a long time ago, and it really works. When you get fully dressed, right down to your shoes, it changes your mindset. You are more likely to approach the day with purpose instead of drifting through it.

Even if you are home all day, getting dressed sends a signal that the day has begun. It helps separate morning from evening and rest from activity, which can be especially helpful if you work from home or spend a lot of time there.

I like to think of this as dressing to face the day. It is a simple habit, but it can make a noticeable difference in how motivated and focused you feel.

Eat Breakfast

PICTURE OF BREAKFAST

I will be honest, I am not much of a breakfast eater. Mornings move quickly for me, and a big meal first thing is not always appealing.

Instead, I usually opt for a good protein shade or a couple of hard-boiled eggs and fruit. It gives me energy without making me feel heavy, and it works well for me. A light breakfast can be just enough to get things going without overdoing it.

The key is not perfection, but consistency. Eating something in the morning helps support energy levels and keeps you from running on empty as the day begins.

Take Your Meds And Vitamins

MORING MEDICINE

Taking medications and vitamins at the same time each morning helps turn it into a steady habit rather than something that gets forgotten. Linking it to your morning routine makes it feel automatic.

My Bobby has this mastered. He takes his pill at the same time every day and even sets an alarm so he does not forget. It goes off at 6:30 sharp. I, on the other hand, tend to remember mine around noon, which tells you exactly why I need this habit.

If an alarm helps, use one. Small reminders like that can make a big difference in staying consistent and taking good care of yourself.

Pray

Spending time in prayer each morning is one of the most grounding habits I know. It helps center my heart and mind before the day begins and reminds me where my strength truly comes from.

Taking time for prayer or a short devotion first thing in the morning sets a peaceful tone that carries through the rest of the day. It does not have to be long or complicated. What matters is showing up and being present.

Spending time with God has made a meaningful difference in my life, and beginning the day this way helps me approach everything else with more calm, clarity, and gratitude.

Exercise

13 Healthy Morning Routine Habits to Cultivate

Moving your body in the morning is a great way to wake up and get your energy going for the day ahead. Even a short amount of movement can help you feel more alert and ready to take on what is next.

I will be honest, exercise has never been my favorite thing, so I like to do it early and get it out of the way. Swimming, however, is something I truly enjoy, and it is my exercise of choice. Finding something you like makes it much easier to stick with.

Stretching in the morning is another habit I love. It feels gentle, calming, and good for the body, and it is an easy way to add movement without feeling overwhelmed.

Step Outside And Get Natural Light

Spending a few minutes outside in the morning can make a noticeable difference in how the day begins. Natural light helps signal to the body that it is time to wake up, supporting energy levels and regulating sleep patterns over time.

When the weather permits, stepping outside barefoot is especially grounding. Feeling the earth under your feet can be calming and centering, and it encourages a slower, more mindful start to the day. Even a few quiet minutes on the porch, patio, or lawn can help clear the mind and set a peaceful tone.

This does not need to be a long walk or a formal routine. Simply opening the door, breathing in fresh air, and letting natural light touch your face is enough. It is a gentle reminder to pause before the day gets busy.

This is a new-to-me morning habit I’m trying to cultivate.

Check Your Schedule

Schedule book

Taking a few minutes in the morning to look over your schedule can make the entire day feel more manageable. Knowing what is ahead helps you move through the day with intention rather than reacting to everything as it comes.

I like to jot down a simple to do list and choose the top five things that truly need my attention. Focusing on those first keeps me from feeling scattered and helps me use my time more wisely.

It is surprising how much clarity comes from spending just a few minutes planning. That small pause in the morning often leads to a calmer, more productive day.

Do A Load Of Laundry

Doing a load of laundry in the morning can make the whole day feel more under control. If the clothes are sorted the night before, it is easy to start a load first thing and move on with the day.

I try to make it a goal to dry, fold, and put the laundry away the same day. When that happens, the laundry basket stays manageable and there is a nice sense of order in the house.

This habit is less about perfection and more about staying ahead of things in a simple, doable way. One small load a day can really make a difference.

  1. I totally enjoy & appreciate your blog. I have found your decorating ideas/rules so helpful. Where can I find the picture next to the bed/behind the lamp. What is the name? I love it!
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Teresa, I found these pictures at a local shop. Sorry, I have not been able to source them.

  2. Good ideas!! Gratitude, make the bed…I run the dishwasher in the evening and unload it while coffee is brewing. Starts the day off without dirty dishes in the sink. Then, I sit with my doggie in my lap, drinking coffee, checking computer, mail. listing to-dos for about 45 minutes, then dress for the day and work on to do list. I’m an early bird, but my Zoe and I love the ritual of snuggling together for those few minutes, I enjoy routine and I feel the best when I have accomplished some small project by the end of the day.

    1. Hobbes, my cat, is with me when I make coffee in the am. He knows that the treat jar is next to the coffee maker. Aren’t our pet family members the best!

      1. I love your blog. I want black tan ivory beogh white but my wood is dark. I’d love suggestions.

        1. You can make that work. Just add some dark accent decor in the same color as your woodwork. Hope this is helpful!

  3. All of these ideas,of course, we hear all the time but it is so motivating that you are doing them daily and making changes! I cannot imagine getting into my lovely linens at night without a bath or shower. But I do love a wake up shower. Looks like I will be super clean now ?. Thank you!

    1. I love a nightly bath too! It does feel so good to get in the sheets when I am clean. But mostly I am a shower in the morning girl.

    2. I agree with you, Ann. I do not want to go to bed dirty. I sleep better clean. Morning shower people are sleeping on dirty sheets every night except for the first time after those sheets have been washed. Yuck! Also, it saves time in the morning by not having to shower.
I do like these other suggestions, though. Especially about drinking water, which I often forget to do enough. I need to make it a habit, as suggested.

Give us a post on what are easy, light breakfast.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Nan, maybe in the fall! I often make a protein shake or have overnight oatmeal.

  5. Barbara C. says:

I do many of these things each morning! I look forward to my morning routine; it really does start the day off right! Thank you, Yvonne.

    1. I’m far from perfect but for me this is a great morning routine to strive for.

  7. Hi Yvonne,
In a recent post you mentioned reading a book called Gracelaced. My copy arrived today and I am wondering whether to start at the beginning entitled “winter” or if I should start with the current season of summer? Or am I being to literal? There is no recommendation from the author so I thought perhaps you could share your thoughts.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Margo! I hope you enjoy this beautiful book. You can really start anywhere. I might suggest starting at the season we are in. I hope you are blessed!

  8. Great blog today. I get up and make a cup of tea to take my supplements with while I read the Word and talk to God first thing. Then I make the bed, etc. If I miss that time with God, my day does not seem to go as well. So I’ve rated it as the most important thing I do to start my day.

  9. Debbie Pope says:

Love these tips that I try and do everyday.

  10. Basically already do both the morning and nighttime routines you’ve listed, mostly. I love the way you’ve put the information in such a beautiful way. I took notes so I can “dot journal” them and so I’ll add some important ones I don’t do every night or morning… the laundry is the big one… and I never turn the tv on before hubby gets up… but seldom listen to music… I’ve decided to had some of my favorite music while I do my bible study. Thank you for the organized inspiration!

  11. Veronica Turner says:

Yvonne – I just love you! You give such good advice and information. Reading this blog is very
inspiring. I will definitely be doing the 30″ cleaning!

    Veronica

  12. Carol Thompson says:

I love your suggestions and your blog. I am a long time follower and you’re a wonderful part of my life. You have a gift sharing your faith. I’m always inspired. Morning Music would be a delightful addition for me to my morning routine!
My routine includes trying to get ten minutes of sunshine when I first wake up to set my circadian rhythm for the day. I’m hearing this over and over recently. I love the sunshine, on warm or cold days. It even works on a dark cloudy day.
I also try to eat a savory breakfast. It makes all the difference in the world. This will cut the sugar cravings and subsequent unhealthy glucose spikes. Reading the book, Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspe was such an eye opener for me in developing life changing habits. She gives 10 easy hacks to prevent glucose spikes that make a monumental difference in the way I feel and function. Hope these tips will be helpful for everyone!

    1. Wow, what great suggestions, Carol. I love the idea of getting out first thing in the am. I used to do that at StoneGable when I could go out in my pajamas and no one was around to see me. I just might be the crazy pajama lady on Tanglewood Drive. LOL!

  13. I don’t set an alarm but rise early on my own and go to bed earlier than I used to. By 10:00, I’m in bed.
I like the silence of the morning. Just me, my coffee and my dog. My husband sleeps later than I. I always make my bed after he rises and before I dress for the day.
Every morning, I pick up my iPad. I check the weather, my calendar, messages, and read a few blogs while I sip my coffee.
I walk every morning and shower upon return. I find exercise first thing starts my day off right and then never gets put off due to getting busy.
My laundry goes in, washed, dried, folded & hung as soon as the dryer dings.
I tried water first thing in the morning but found having water then coffee made me have to pee while walking so I stopped the water as I need and enjoy the coffee. I drink water after my walk.
I look forward to your What’s trending in 2024 post.
    Happy New Year everyone!

    1. Wow, you are a fabulous example! I must admit, since the fall I’ve slacked off and have reset. Ready for a bright New Year. Thanks for letting us know a morning routine can be done.

  15. So many great tips here! Even if I incorporate just a couple, I will feel like I’m ahead of the game.

    Thank you, Yvonne!

    Jody

  16. Love your blog! I start my day with several of your suggestions~the most important being pray.
Do you have A source for the bed skirt?
Happy New Year, Yvonne! Looking forward to your 2025 blog.

  17. Gloria Fredericks says:

    Hi Yvonne,

I truly enjoy your blog. It’s so informative and presented in such an easy way. I really appreciate the time you take to share your thoughts with us. I do some of the steps of your morning routine, but I am looking to revamp my morning routine for the new year. I’m slowly changing the decor in my home. I was wondering if you could tell me where you got your bedspread it’s beautiful. I love the color. Again, thank you for all the time and effort and wonderful ideas that you share with us. Have a wonderful new year. May it be filled with many blessings and joy.

    1. Thank you Gloria, happy and blessed New Year to you too! The bedskirt is from Soft Surroundings, however, I have not seen it on their website for quite some time and can’t find a source for it.

  18. Bonnie Prokop says:

Love the article and even shared it it’s my son. What I really love is the beige and white daisy Picture in the cover photo! Can you share where you found it? If not, is there a better picture of it somewhere I could search. Since the pillow and lamp are so integrated in the picture it’s hard to cut out just the part of the picture. Thank you.

  19. June DeHart says:

That’s a great list. Many I already do. There are some I plan to start doing.
Best of all is the list at the end to save as reminder.

  20. I do most of these. I get up early to not be rushed. Make my coffee and pick up my iPad to check my calendar, then texts, the weather, emails that need an answer. A piece of toast with peanut butter is my go to breakfast. I get dressed every morning. Never sweats or yoga pants. Most mornings I’m off for my four km walk first thing. It starts my day off right. I like to shower afterwards and dress for what my day looks like.

  21. Happy New Year Yvonne. I love this post on morning habits. They are all great suggestions. I start my day with prayer before I get out of bed. It starts the day off with what is most important to me. I wish you and your family all the best in the new year. P.S. – I owe you a huge thank you. Years ago you recommended a great book by Brian Tracy “ Eat the Frog”. Excellent book. It was life changing in the most positive way.

  22. This is a great post and good habits to establish. There is one, though, that I won’t do and it’s due to skin issues.

I have eczema and trying to sleep without showering or bathing is a big no-no for me. Morning showers feel great, but sleeping on sheets that will quickly have daily build-up on them will irritate my skin. Even with nightly showers and fresh pjs, I still have to change sheets quite frequently. If I added daily dust and skin-sheds to the bed, it would be awful. I know that’s not the case for everyone but it is for me.
