Hide God’s Word In Your Heart: A Simple Habit for A Peaceful Life

Discover why memorizing Scripture and hiding God’s Word in your heart strengthens faith and equips you for daily spiritual battles.

I have been blessed with six adorable grandbabies. Anderson, Emma Kate, Alexander, Amira, Bailey, and MacAlister. From the day each of these precious little ones was born, I have sung Jesus Loves Me to them as many times as I can in a day. I am no singer, believe me. But I don’t think God cares much about that, and neither do my babies.

When I sing, I use arm motions and exaggerated facial expressions, and I sing this beloved Bible song at a cheerful pace, just as it was meant to be sung, joyful and full of life, never slow or somber.

I especially love singing quietly into the ears of our tiniest babies. When I sang Jesus Loves Me softly into Bailey’s ear, he would grow perfectly still, listening with wide eyes. Every time it happened, my heart melted.

I often think about the tiny ears of all my grandbabies and pray they will be protected from the foul, base, and filthy things of this world. I pray that our family continually pours into them what is good, wholesome, and perfect.

Words Of Wisdom

The Bible says …

I HAVE HIDDEN YOUR WORD IN MY HEART SO I MAY NOT SIN AGAINST YOU. Psalm 119:11

Even though all my grandchildren are still young, it is important to begin helping them hide God’s Word in their hearts now.

It is just as important for us to make hiding God’s Word in our hearts a lifelong habit. When temptation comes or weakness sets in, Scripture is what we call upon. God’s Word strengthens, steadies, and blesses us in every season of life.

In Ephesians 6, God tells us how to dress ourselves for the day ahead. He calls it putting on the armor of God. Part of that armor, used to fight the evil that confronts us daily, is a sword. It is called the sword of the Spirit. Did you know it is the only offensive weapon we are given, and the one we truly need?

TAKE UP THE HELMET OF SALVATION AND THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD. Eph 6:17

Our Defensive Weapon

Our sword is the Word of God.

In the book of Hebrews, the Bible is described as a double-edged sword.

I do not want my precious grandbabies to grow up without the proper weapon to fight evil. And they will face it. God tells us our battle is daily and close, face-to-face, requiring strength and readiness.

I don’t want to be defenseless against evil, and I don’t want that for my grandchildren either. I suspect you feel the same way.

So let’s commit to memorizing Scripture so we can stand firm when challenges come. Sharpen your sword. Hide God’s Word in your heart.

For Your Little Ones

If you have little ones, Songs For Saplings is a wonderful resource. It teaches Bible verses through simple songs and can be found on YouTube, Amazon Echo, and Google Home.

This is the A scripture …

And right now I am memorizing scripture with the help of Malichi Daily, “a daily newsletter with an eternal purpose” that helps me memorize one scripture verse a week, giving me an in-depth understanding of what it says.

This is a verse I return to often …

I HAVE HIDDEN YOUR WORD IN MY HEART SO I MIGHT NOT SIN AGAINST YOU Ps 119:11

Happy Sunday, Friend.

Good morning. LOVE the hiding your heart piece, and i have shared with a number of people. I sing the same song to my 22 mo grandson, emmett, and he, like yours, gets eerily quiet and stops crying. Power of the Name of Jesus.

My dear friend, suzy, was the Director of an excellent, Christian preschool in santa barbara, where our 4 went, and i was the administrator for a few yrs. She just retired, and is starting to write, “confessions of a pre-schhol Director” on a range of topics. I am helping he4 with it, and i just sent her your post today about surrounding children with beauty as a hedge against the ugliness that can be in the world.
    Thanks!

I don’t minimize the absorption of babies environment. Both my children are adopted and my daughter is half Hispanic. When she was about 2-1/2, I missed her so went looking, of course. And she was cross legged on top of my bed listening to the Spanish station on television. I asked her if she wanted me to change the station and she said she loved that one. There is no doubt in my mind that those sounds were familiar to her. She did this several times. We got her when she was weeks old but somehow she had heard those same sounds. There is so much we don’t know. I’ll always remember that.

  6. I learned yesterday at a reveal party that I’m getting a grandson in July. Thank you for your mini-sermons and for this wonderful resource for the alphabet scripture songs. You are amazing, and I look forward to your Sunday post every week.

    1. Congratulation and God’s blessing to you and your growing little one coming in July!

  7. I am so glad to read this! It is so precious that you sing Jesus Loves Me to your grandchildren. My grandchildren are almost adults now – in college – but their parents and grandparents have given them a base to live their life for.
If you are not a Christian, I don’t know how you can live a life of peace. Not a life without problems – just a life of peace.

  8. Sandi from Wisconsin says:

  9. When I held my two grandsons for the first time in the hospital, I sang this song:
“I’m something special, I’m the only one of my kind. God gave me a body and a
bright, healthy mind. He had a special purpose that He wanted me to find. And
He made me something special. I’m the only one of my kind.”

  10. Love the message thank you.

  11. Thank you for the Songs for Saplings suggestion. As my grandchildren grow I keep looking for opportunitirs to teach them about God and Jesus.

  12. Yvonne
Every time I read your post I feel so good and grateful about life. I think in this way we all need this.
    Thank you
