When life feels uncertain, when the way ahead is unclear, or when we simply need wisdom for the next step, there is a light we can always turn to.

God’s Word.

Psalm 119:105 gives us one of the most beautiful promises in Scripture:

“THY WORD IS A LAMP UNTO MY FEET AND A LIGHT UNTO MY PATH.”

God never intended for us to stumble through life in the dark. He has given us His Word to guide us, teach us, comfort us, and show us the way.

Breakfast Around Our Table

When my children were young, I got up early every school morning to make breakfast. I won’t pretend it was always easy. Some mornings I practically dragged myself out of bed. But there was something more important than the hot breakfast waiting on the table.

A spiritual breakfast.

Before school and before work, our family gathered around the kitchen table. We ate together, read God’s Word together, worked through devotional books together, and prayed together.

Outside it was often still dark. Inside our home, God’s truth was lighting the day before it even began. We did this year after year.

Was I a perfect mother? Not even close. But I knew that feeding my children physically and spiritually was one of the greatest gifts I could give them.

Finding Jesus Changed Everything

I came to faith in Christ when I was 33 years old. I knew exactly what Jesus had rescued me from, and I knew the incredible price He paid for my salvation. The weight that had rested on my soul for years was lifted, and I became hungry for God in a way I had never experienced before.

I wanted to know Him. I wanted to understand His character. I wanted to hear His voice through His Word. Most of all, I wanted my children to know Him too.

By God’s grace, both of my children accepted Christ at a young age. My prayer was that they would be spared many of the painful choices and consequences I experienced before coming to faith.

A Verse That Felt Written Just For Me

Psalm 42:1 perfectly described what was happening in my heart:

“AS A DEER PANTS AFTER WATER SO MY SOUL PANTS AFTER THEE.”

When I first read those words, it felt as though God had written them just for me. That verse captured my longing to know Him more.

The more I read Scripture, the more I loved the Lord. The more I studied, the more I trusted Him. The more I trusted Him, the more I wanted to obey Him.

God’s Word was changing me from the inside out.

How Can You Serve A God You Do Not Know

I used to say to my children, “How can you serve a God you do not know”? How can anyone know a God they do not spend time with?

When my children turned thirteen, I asked them to commit to reading a chapter from the Book of Psalms and a chapter from the Book of Proverbs every day until they were out of high school. And they did.

Why the Book of Psalms? Because in it, God shows His character. He shows who He is. And it is so important not to think of God as a man or someone you can even hope to understand fully! But the Psalms give the reader a small glimpse of the glory of God!

And why read the book of Proverbs? Well, let’s get it right from the source…

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.

What a gift.

Wisdom.

Instruction.

Insight.

Prudent behavior.

Knowledge.

Discretion.

Those are things every teenager needs. Those are things every adult needs too.

Thy Word Is A Lamp Unto My Feet

THY WORD IS A LAMP UNTO MY FEET AND A LIGHT UNTO MY PATH. Psalm 119:105

God’s Word illuminates the dark places of life. It shines light on confusion. It reveals truth when the world offers conflicting messages. It helps us discern right from wrong. It shows us where to place our feet and which direction to walk.

The Bible does not always reveal the entire road ahead. Instead, it gives us enough light for the next faithful step. And then the next. And then the next.

That is how God often leads His children.

Today, I want to ask you the same question I asked my children years ago. Will you commit to reading one chapter from Psalms and one chapter from Proverbs every day?

Not as a duty. Not to check a box.But because you want to know the God who loves you.

Open His Word. Let its truth shape your thinking. Its wisdom will guide your decisions, and God’s Word will illuminate your path of life. You may be surprised by how clearly God directs your steps when you consistently spend time with Him.

THY WORD IS A LAMP UNTO YOUR FEET AND A LIGHT UNTO YOUR PATH. Psalm 119:105

May God’s Word shine brightly on your path this week, and may you see Him magnified in every area of your life

  20. Teri Pickens says:

How awesome is the Bible! I truly believe that his word is a Lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path . I can’t imagine not reading the Bible daily. I’m fact I read it in the morning as I sit in my rocking chair on the porch and it is the last thing I do before closing my eyes at night. Your advice about the Amplified Bible has really helped me in my studies! Thank you,
    Teri

    1. You are a good example, Teri! And yes, the Amplified Bible is a very good version.

  21. Dot Byrdic says:

Good word, Yvonne! And I would add, memorize as much of God’s word as you can while you’re young. It will always stick with you and it can be harder to memorize when you’re older.

  22. Thank you so much Yvonne, for reminding me of the only thing that is truly important in life. Your inspiration today has reminded me of what I’ve been missing for so many years. I must return to God to save me from my chaotic life. I have not worshiped since I was a child and your words today reminded me of what I need to get back to you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  23. Yvonne, you are such an inspiration to me. I wish I read this when I was raising my children.
I look forward to reading your Sunday devotional before church. God has given you an amazing gift. This was the path He was getting you ready for..helping and guiding other Christian women. Thank you

    1. Oh, I thank God with all my heart for this platform! May He use it for His glory and our good.

  24. As always your Sunday message is very needed. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on all the chaos and confusion going on now in the world, but especially US. I know your Sunday messages are probably planned, but I ‘d love your thoughts, as you have grands too.

    1. I do not share my political thought on the blog, other than I love my country. What I will share is God calls us to pray for our leaders. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says… “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We need to head this command and as Christians call out to God. Also, pray for revival. It all starts with HIS people.

  25. ❤️🌸💐🌼🪻🌹🌿
    ❤️ Blessings ❤️
    ♥️ Dear Yvonne,
God Bless You and your family for all that you do. 🐦

Thank you Yvonne. Just a week ago, I committed to reading 1 Proverb a day…every day. And encouraging my bible study to read as well. We pray for God’s wisdom and discernment, what better way to attain it, than to READ it daily. There are 31 Proverbs, read 1 a day, and repeat every month. Today is June 7th, read Proverbs 7. Start it today. I will add Psalms to my Proverbs.
    Blessings to all.
