Knowing The Names Of God, Part III

Learning the Name of God helps you know His character, call on Him in a personal way, and see Him as He reveals Himself. Knowing His name builds faith.

Bible study on the Names of God with scripture references and meanings

One of my favorite things to study about God is His names. In the Bible, God reveals His character and who He is through His names. They are not just titles but powerful truths about His nature. In ancient times, a person’s name was closely tied to their character, and learning the names of God helps us know Him more deeply and trust Him more fully.

Even today, names carry meaning and give us a sense of identity. So, when God reveals Himself through a specific name, He is showing us something unique and personal about who He is. This series, NAMES OF GOD, is divided into three parts to walk through His revealed names in the Old Testament. Today we will look at the final four names of God.

If you missed the beginning of this series, you might want to go back to The Names Of God, Part I and The Names Of God, Part II. These first posts explain the foundational names JEHOVAH and LORD, which will help you better understand today’s study.

One of my favorite things to study about God is His names. God, in the Bible, reveals His character and who He is through His names. His names are very important. In ancient times a person’s NAME was associated with their character. And learning the names of God will help you in many aspects of your life.

Even today our names carry with them mental images of who we are and what we do. So, when God reveals Himself through a specific name, we get to know something very special about Him. NAMES OF GOD is a three-part series to learn all of God’s revealed names in the Old Testament. Today, we will look at the last four names of God…

It might be a good idea to go back to THE NAMES OF GOD, PART I, and THE NAMES OF GOD, PART II, to review the names JEHOVAH and LORD. It will help you understand today’s Sunday Scriptures much better.

JEHOVAH SABAOTH (yeh-ho-vah sah-bay-oth) — THE LORD OF HOSTS

Jehovah Sabaoth is used 285 times in the Old Testament. It means The Lord of Hosts and refers to the Lord as the ruler over all the armies of heaven and earth. Hosts here means armies, both heavenly and earthly. God, who is sovereign and the only King, has complete power and authority as the LORD OF HOSTS.

The angelic armies of Jehovah Sabaoth are not cherub-like angels we sometimes picture but mighty and powerful warriors. When you feel weak, weary, or unable to fight life’s battles on your own, call on Jehovah Sabaoth. He is your strength and defender.

JEHOVAH RAAH (yeh-ho-vah’ raw’ ah) — THE LORD MY SHEPHERD

We find God as Jehovah Raah in Psalm 23. The word raah comes from ro’eh, meaning “shepherd” in Hebrew. This name beautifully portrays the tender, life-giving care of a shepherd for his flock. Sheep cannot survive without the protection and provision of their shepherd, and their condition directly reflects his care. In the same way, our very lives depend on our Shepherd’s care.

Jehovah Raah reveals God as our caregiver, provider, and intimate companion. He is both protector and friend. Psalm 23 begins, “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.” This psalm reminds us that with the LORD as our Shepherd, we are safe, provided for, and never alone.

JEHOVAH TSIDKENU (yeh-ho-vah’ tsid-kay’-noo) — THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Jehovah Tsidkenu appears twice in the Old Testament. The word tsidkenu comes from the Hebrew root meaning “to be stiff” or “to be straight.” Righteousness in Hebrew thought carries the image of being straight—standing upright and in right relationship and peace (Shalom) with God.

On our own, we cannot be righteous before God. As the Bible says:
“All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind, our sins sweep us away.” — Isaiah 64:6

Only through Jesus Christ can we be in right standing with God. He exchanges our filthy rags of self-righteousness for His pure and perfect righteousness. This happens when we surrender to Him in faith, bowing to Jesus as our Adonai, our LORD and Savior.

EHOVAH SHAMMAH (yeh-ho-vah’ shawm’-maw) — THE LORD IS THERE

Jehovah Shammah appears once in the Old Testament, in Ezekiel 48:35. The word comes from “sham,” meaning “to be there.” This is a name of great hope. It was given to the restored city of Jerusalem, where God will once again dwell with His people.

This name assures us that God will be present with His people forever. Jehovah Shammah points us to the day when the Lord will return to His temple and live among us for all eternity. Just as we cry out, “Maranatha, come quickly Lord Jesus,” we look with hope to Jehovah Shammah—the LORD who is there.

  10. Few Christians seem to know that Jehovah is God’s name. My mom said women in her bible study group actually made fun of the name Jehovah! I have an American Standard Bible from around the early 1900’s and the men who were translating it put the name Jehovah back every where it originally was. The thing amazing about this is that they stated that they knew this would offend some people! Why?????

    1. Judith Marsch says:

Hello Carol, I’m from Germany and my English is not so well. But I try to explain why this name of God is not used so often in new translations.
I use a “Elberfelder” translation. And they explain why they translate JEHOVA with LORD .
Because no one of the old people in Israel used this name. The name of God: JAHWE was so holy to them that they wanted to be shure, not to speak out . So they mixed the names JAHWEH JHWH) with ADONAJ to remind the readers to say Adonaj instead of Jahwe. People who didn’t know this rule, had to read Jehovah. So, in the “Elberfelder” they changed Jehovah into LORD.
      I hope, you can understand….

  38. Thank Yvonne for this study of knowing God’s names and their meanings. I always look forward to Sunday scripture. Thank You for doing these each week.

  39. The bible verse that is sticking in my mind these days is Matthew 28:20 – “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” This verse, which was spoken by Jesus in the New Testament, seems to me to incorporate the meaning of Jehovah Shammah, as well as that of Jehovah Raah. No matter what happens, we don’t need to be afraid because we are never alone.
