Celebrate the red, white, and blue this summer by adding a Patriotic basket on your front door. It’s an easy and festive way to greet family and friends and give your home a cheerful, all-American touch for the season.

One of the most fun ways to welcome the season is by creating something eye-catching for your front door. This year, I repurposed a summer door decoration I had made previously and turned it into a charming front door basket to celebrate our All-American summer holidays.

PATRIOTIC DOOR BASKET

Here are step-by-step instructions to make this red, white, and blue decoration for your front door.

I started with a summer hydrangea basket I already had. You can see how to make it HERE.

I repurposed some of the elements in the basket along with red, white, and pink florals from my stash in the basement into a festive patriotic design. This is such an easy and budget-friendly way to create something beautiful for your front door.

I hope this patriotic DIY gives you ideas to use what you already have to make something new for your front door.

What You Will Need:

Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy patriotic front door basket:

  • A basket suitable for hanging on your front door– here is a similar one.
  • Wet/ dry floral foam blocks
  • Assorted flowers in patriotic colors (red, white, and blue)
  • Patriotic ribbon
  • Small American flags
  • Hot glue gun
  • Florist wire

Flowers for This Front Door Basket

I always use nice silk flowers for my outdoor wreaths and baskets. I’m not particular about them looking almost real, especially for outdoor decor. Even with a covered front porch, the flowers can still get dusty, rained on, or visited by critters. What matters most to me is that the flowers hold up well and look fresh all season long, rather than paying more for ones that look real but might not last as long outside.

Here’s How to Make a Patriotic Front Door Basket

red and white ribbon

Florist foam blocks give the flowers and flags in the basket a secure base that helps keep them in place.

I positioned three wet/dry florist foam blocks horizontally inside the basket so they filled the bottom half and created a sturdy foundation for arranging the flowers and flags.

Add a Ribbon to the Basket

The first step is to hot-glue a ribbon around the rim of the basket. I chose a red and white striped ribbon to add a bit of color and an extra layer of detail for an Americana look.

Add Florist Foam Blocks

Florist foam blocks give the flowers and flags that go into the basket a good, secure base that helps them stay where you put them.

I secured three wet/dry florist foam blocks horizontally inside the basket. They filled the bottom half of the basket.

Arrange Red Geraniums

Secure two red geranium bunches into the florist foam. Place them side by side in the center of the basket and gently fan out the blooms so they fill the middle space evenly and create a full, balanced look.

Arrange Pink Geraniums

Red and pink geraniums look beautiful together and create a cheerful, summery mix. Secure the pink geraniums next to the red ones in the florist foam, and gently fan out the blooms so they blend nicely and fill in the arrangement.

You could stop here, add a bow and flags, and have a beautiful patriotic basket. I wanted something a bit bigger and showier to be seen from the street.

Add Hydrangeas and Other Embellishments

Finally, tuck white hydrangeas into the arrangement to fill in the spaces and create a full, balanced look. Adjust the florals so they are evenly distributed and pleasing to the eye. For this basket, four white hydrangeas and a few clusters of white ball pods were used to add color, interest, and texture.

Notice the shape of the arrangement in the basket. It has a soft pyramid appearance.

Add a Patriotic Bow

Make a bow using red, white, and blue ribbon and fasten it to the front of the basket with hot glue or florist wire. For this basket, a loopy bow was made with 2 1/2-inch navy ribbon with white stars, and the same red and white striped ribbon used on the basket was added as the bow tails for a coordinated look.

Hang On the Door

Hang the patriotic basket on your front door. This is the perfect time to step back and take a good look at your creation. Make any small adjustments—fluff the blooms, even out the colors, straighten the ribbons, and remove any hot glue spider webs for a clean, finished look.

Add the Flags

Once everything is arranged the way you like it, tuck an American flag on each side of the basket to give it that final festive Americana look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I arrange florals and flags for the best look?

Balance is everything! Start at the center and build outward. Place the boldest blooms (like red geraniums) in the middle, then fan out white and blue around them. Tuck flags and accents on the sides or top third so they peek out without overwhelming the design. Step back to make sure colors are evenly spread and flags don’t look hidden or off-balance.

How do I safely attach a door basket without damaging the door?

Many wonder about attachment—what won’t leave marks or scratch the finish. The easiest non-damaging options include over-the-door wreath hooks or 3M Command strips/hooks rated for outdoor use. If your basket is heavier, try a narrow magnetic hanger (for steel doors). These options let you hang your basket easily and remove it later without a trace. We screwed a hook in our door and it has lasted for years. However, the door does have a small hole in it now.

What materials are best for outdoor patriotic decor?

Durability over realism is key, especially with sun, rain, dust, and critters. Silk flowers and weather-resistant ribbons are ideal. These hold up nicely and stay looking fresh all season. I prefer them over pricey “realistic” florals that fade fast.
