Natural Christmas Tree

The holiday season is coming quickly, and I couldn’t be more excited to share this year’s Christmas decorating trends. These trends will make your home feel cozy, festive, and stylish. No matter the style you prefer, these trends are sure to inspire you to create a magical space for your family and guests.

Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll see in homes this Christmas, along with a few tips on easily incorporating these trends into the holiday decor you already have!

Be In The Know

Trends can be a bit confusing. So, to be in the know about what a trend is and how trends affect you, knowing a bit about what a trend is and what it isn’t will help.

What Is A Trend

Trends are born as a response to the world around us, offering creative solutions to the changes and challenges we face. These trends can be practical, inventive, or occasionally a little over-the-top!

When we talk about trends, we’re referring to interior design styles that are currently in the spotlight—what’s fresh, hot, and wildly popular right now. This doesn’t mean other styles are outdated, unattractive, or irrelevant! They’re simply not the latest, trendsetting looks making waves in the design world at the moment.

No matter how you feel about trends, always use what you love in your home! Because your home is just that… YOUR HOME!

When we decorate our homes, we should not be overly concerned about trends because what we love to fill our homes with is really a matter of personal style and or individual tastes. Just enjoy them!

What A Trend Is Not

A trend is not a declaration that other styles are outdated, unattractive, or wrong. Just because something isn’t the current “it” look doesn’t mean it has lost its charm or relevance.

Trends are simply what’s capturing widespread attention at the moment.

A trend is also not a rule that needs to be followed. You’re not obligated to embrace every new trend that comes along. In fact, a trend should inspire you, not pressure you. If it doesn’t resonate with your style or lifestyle, it’s perfectly fine to pass on it.

For many of us, our Christmas decor is deeply personal and rooted in our family’s tradition. Your home should reflect your taste and personality, not just what’s trending. It’s important to remember that timeless styles, classic elements, or even your personal favorites don’t lose value just because they aren’t in the spotlight.

Trends come and go, but your home should always feel like you, no matter what’s “in” at the moment.

Trends can be a great source of inspiration and fun when decorating for Christmas. The key is to incorporate them in a way that complements your personal style and the overall feel of your home.

Start by choosing one or two trends that resonate with you and adding them to your existing holiday decor. For example, if you love the Regency-Inspired Christmas trend, you could add beautiful velvet ribbons or metallic accents to your tree while keeping your favorite traditional ornaments. Trends are meant to enhance and refresh your space, not replace your entire look and the things you love. By blending trendy items with what you already have, your Christmas decor will feel both stylish and uniquely yours.

Now let’s take a look at what will be the biggest and best Christmas trends this year…

Natural And Organic Materials

This year, we’re embracing the beauty of nature in Christmas decor. This is nothing new. For many of us, using things from nature is what Christmas decorating is all about. Personally, I think Christmas decor that is mostly created from naturals and organics is the most beautiful and reflects a nostalgic and old-world look.

So, think about using pinecones, evergreen branches, berries, wooden ornaments, and natural textiles. Decorating with these elements brings a warm, close-to-nature charm to your home and helps create a calm, earthy holiday atmosphere.

About Faux Naturals

Incorporating faux items from nature into Christmas decor has become very popular, and for good reason. They can look incredibly realistic and beautiful. Faux evergreens, garlands, and trees are not only less messy but can also be a smart investment over time.

I’ve always leaned toward a natural and organic aesthetic in my decor. For years, I used real greenery throughout our home, but in the last decade, I’ve transitioned to mostly faux naturals. While I do miss the scent of real pine, I certainly don’t miss the cleanup!

My best advice is to invest in the most realistic faux items. I’m always on the lookout for sales since high-quality faux greenery can be a bit of an investment, but the look and convenience are well worth it.

Mixing Real And Faux Christmas Organics

The best way to use faux greens and other faux Christmas naturals is to mix them with real organic elements. This combination elevates the faux naturals, giving your Christmas decor a fresh, realistic appearance.

A Yearning For Christmases Past

The next three big Christmas trends this year are all based in a deep sense of nostalgia. There’s a collective yearning for a simpler, more meaningful way to celebrate life and the holidays— focusing on slowing down and savoring each moment. Trends like Handmade Christmas, Cottage Core Christmas, and Nostalgic Christmas tap into this desire, honoring the charm and traditions of days gone by when life moved at a more relaxed pace and holiday celebrations felt very personal.

Handmade Christmas

In a world of mass-produced holiday decor, there’s something extra special about a handmade Christmas. This trend brings back the homemade aesthetic of years gone by when life was simpler and slower.

This trend is all about bringing a personal, artisanal touch to your holiday home. Handmade decorations are not only more meaningful but often more sustainable, too. Your handmade Christmas could include making your own tree ornaments or gifting homemade goodies. This trend focuses on heartwarming, thoughtful, and intentional touches that add warmth and charm to your decor.

Cottagecore Christmas

The cottagecore trend is absolutely everywhere this year. This style is very nostalgic and idyllic which celebrates natural soft materials, vintage finds, and muted earthy palettes. It pays homage to English country living that has an understated elegance and a lived-in comfortable look and feel.

Since the style is so popular, it’s only natural that a Cottagecore Christmas would be trending this year. Imagine living 100 years ago in an old English country mansion with a working farm- decorate Christmas accordingly! There is a big crossover between Handmade and Cottagecore Christmas. They both elevate everyday living and Christmas decorating to something intentional and meaningful.

Nostalgic Christmas

This year, I’m seeing a strong return to tradition with Nostalgic Christmas decor. It’s all about recreating the magic and charm of holidays past, bringing back those warm, sentimental feelings through vintage-inspired pieces and cherished family heirlooms.

Think of your childhood Christmas memories—sparkling tinsel on the tree, large, colorful Christmas tree lights, classic glass ornaments, a ceramic Christmas tree, and cozy handmade stockings. Nostalgic Christmas celebrates the timeless traditions that make this season so special. Enjoy all the special and memorable trends from your childhood!

Red And Green With A Twist

Traditional Christmas colors are making a comeback, but this time with a modern twist. This year, you will see classic reds and greens combined with softer, muted tones like sage green and deep cranberry. This creates a refined look that feels both fresh and timeless. I think this is a reflection of all the nostalgic Christmas trends.

Let’s enjoy these classic colors done in a fun and vintage-feel way.

Whimsical Maximalist

For those who love a bold, playful look, this trend is for you! Christmas 2024 embraces a sense of fun with whimsical, maximalist decor. Imagine oversized ornaments, colorful lights, and bold patterns all working together to create a festive, joyful atmosphere. It’s a riot of color and pattern that celebrates the season in the happiest way.

Tinsel

Are you old enough to remember the joy of throwing a handful of tinsel at a tree? Well, get ready because tinsel is back as one of the biggest Christmas decorating trends for 2024! This shimmery trend goes hand-in-hand with the huge retro Christmas trends this year.

I remember real lead foil tinsel because my grandmother, Nani would lovingly take the tinsel off the tree every year and reuse it the next. So our tree, when I was young, had tinsel made years before I was born. It was shiny but not very reflective and had a weight to it. It also was a bit crinkly. I loved this tinsel!

This Christmas look for tinsel in traditional silver and gold, as well as in fun colors like pink, teal, and even more contemporary, iridescent shades. This year, tinsel is the what’s old is new again Christmas decor.

Mushroom Decor

What an unexpected Christmas 2024 trend-Christmas mushroom decor! It combines the Natural And Organic Trend with a magical, fairytale twist. Who knew! Mushrooms are everywhere this Christmas. You will find these playful fungi on wrapping paper, as tree ornaments, and more! Mushrooms will add a little whimsy and fun to your holiday.

Statement Trees

This year, trees are BIG. Gone are the minimalist trees and more-than-one-tree trends. This year, our trees take center stage as the biggest Christmas statement in our homes. It’s all about personalizing and creating a tree that reflects our style. Make your tree as unique as you are, and do it in a big way.

Wondering When To Start Decorating For Christmas This Year

The best time to start decorating for Christmas is when you feel ready and comfortable. However, sometimes we all need a little nudge in the right direction, so let me share my thoughts…

This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 28th, which is quite late. If you start decorating the day after Thanksgiving, you’ll only have 24 days until Christmas Eve. If you’re anything like me, you’re not just the decorator—you’re the Christmas cookie baker, the gift buyer and wrapper, the chef, the dishwasher, the hostess, and so much more! While these tasks are definitely in my wheelhouse, trying to get everything done in just 24 days while working full time, teaching Bible study, taking care of my family, and juggling a million other things can really take some of the joy out of the season and drain my energy.

Christmas Decorating And Blogging

As a blogger, I’ll be starting my Christmas decorating next week. I know, it’s early! We bloggers tend to decorate well ahead of schedule to share ideas with you. I’ve gotten used to seeing a Christmas tree in my house by Halloween! But I have to say, there are some huge advantages to decorating early (but maybe not that early for you).

Best Time To Decorate This Year

If you love Christmas as much as I do, starting early allows you to enjoy the fruits of your hard work and the magical decor you’ve created for much longer. You can take your time with the decorating process and avoid feeling rushed. It also gives you a head start on buying or making the items you need before they sell out.

This year, consider decorating a bit earlier for Christmas. Even putting up some of your decor before Thanksgiving week can make a big difference. You can at least get the foundational decorations in place. To help you out, I’ve created a guide called DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS: WHERE TO START, WHAT TO DO. It will give you a step-by-step plan for decking your halls this season!

So many other trends are popping up during the holiday season; here are a few more that are worth noting…

Regency- Inspired Christmas

Regency Christmas is a beautiful style inspired by the elegance of the Regency era, similar to the luxurious scenes in Bridgerton. This style features rich jewel tones, velvet ribbons, ornate gold accents, and decor that feels like it belongs in a grand manor. It brings a romantic, old-world charm to your holiday decorating.

Elegant Tables

Set your table with antique dishes or use your wedding china, and make sure to use a tablecloth! Elegant tables, Statement Tables, with your very best, are trending this Christmas season. Add sparkle with silver, gold and crystal and fill your table with beautiful floral arrangements. Include thoughtful touches like place cards and crystal knife rests to elevate your tablescape. Christmas is the most perfect time to share your beautiful things with others.

Kitschmas

Kitschy, cute Christmas decor. Pink trees and quirky mix-and-match ornaments that play to unique interests and personal tastes will be a trend for those who love retro and vintage styles.

Playful Patterns And Bold Prints

Festive plaid, whimsical polka dots, and striking stripes will be seen on everything from tree skirts to ornaments to throw blankets and even wrapping paper. These bold patterns add fun and personality to holiday decor.

Decorating for Christmas 2024 is right around the corner. This season’s decorating trends offer a beautiful mix of tradition, fun, and creativity, giving you so many ways to make your home feel festive in your own way.

You can embrace red and green in a new way, create a Christmas that feels like a walk in the woods, or get playful with patterns and bold colors. This year’s trends allow you to add to what you already have and try something new.

The most important thing to remember is Christmas decorating is all about bringing joy to your home and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for family and friends. So, however you decorate for the holiday, let your creativity shine!

What Are Trends

Trends are born as a response to the world around us, offering creative solutions to the changes and challenges we face. These trends can be practical, inventive, or occasionally a little over-the-top!

What Are Trendy Colors For Christmas 2024?

Trendy colors run the gamut this year. Since organics and naturals will be big, choose colors from nature. Bright cranberry and sage green will be a festive alternative to the traditional red and white. And since we will be seeing a colorful mix-and-match Minimalist trend, add any color to what you already have.

What is the trend for Christmas ornaments this year?

Bring the outdoors inside with trending natural ornaments like pinecones, acorns, and berries. Add big, oversized, bold ornaments to your tree to make a Statement Tree that will be very trendy this year.

  1. I’m definitely not a “trendy” person but this post if FULL of great ideas and tips. Thanks!!

  2. I love you posts but, seriously?? It’s mid October, not even Halloween yet and you’re talking about Christmas decorations!?? Let me enjoy fall and the fall decorations without this. Slow down a bit!

  3. Thanks for so many helpful and beautiful ideas for Christmas. Our Christmas is low-key without a lot of baking and decorating these days. Oh, I do remember the days when everything from the doorstop to the rafters were decorated with handmade/homemade stuff! We also baked and froze from Labor Day until the first Christmas party.
We do still have the one large nostalgic tree. I believe my children and grandjoys would revolt if they could not find the crawfish Santa in the pirogue, the star made of popsicle sticks, the few remaining ornaments hung on the tree since 1968, our first Christmas as newlyweds, the Liberty bell from the 8th-grade field trip…you get the idea! We also must have the handmade ceramic nativity under the tree and await the placement of the Baby Jesus (with the broken arm) on Christmas Eve.
May your Christmas be blessed and your season merry.

    1. Oh, now this sounds like the perfect Christmas decor. What a pleasure to read. I wish you the most blessed and merry Christmas.

  4. I love that you said we should decorate for Christmas when we’re ready 🙂 Both my neighbor and I are going to decorate before Thanksgiving because the guests that we both have coming then, have never seen our homes decorated for Christmas and they will only be here for Thanksgiving. So early it is for us this year!

I’ve coined a term for this early Christmas decorating, while still celebrating Thanksgiving: “Thanksmas” 😀
And because we’ll be decorated sooner, we can enjoy all the concerts, parties & get-togethers all ready for the season. And the real Reason for Season can be celebrated even earlier!….and Jesus’ birth is important to celebrate every day!

    1. I just love your comment, Connie! How wonderful that you are treating your family and guests a look at your Christmas decor. I’m sure they will LOVE it! And Yes, it is perfect and right to celebrate Jesus any time!

  5. I love all your beautiful ideas! I have to add one thing though. If you have cats, pass on the tinsel! Shiny, stringlike items are irresistible to them, and can cause a lot of damage if they eat them.
