It’s been a while since I’ve given our small bedroom any attention, and it was starting to feel a bit tired. I wasn’t ready to replace any of the furniture because it still looks nice and works well with the size of the room. But I knew it needed a little refreshing. Decorating a bedroom without buying new furniture is a smart and doable way to update this personal space and make it feel fresh and inviting again.
Our bedroom is on the small side, but it’s just the right size for us and our downsized lifestyle. It, like the rest of our home, is filled with slim-lined traditional furnishings and decorated in warm, mostly neutral colors. When I noticed it was getting tired, I decided to redecorate our bedroom, adding a little pattern and a new color.
You may not need to completely decorate your bedroom over again, but making a few thoughtful changes can turn it into a lovely, restful room you love. Here are eight simple, creative ideas for decorating a bedroom without buying new furniture.
Switch Out The Bedding
One of the biggest updates you can make in a bedroom, without changing any of the furniture, is to switch out the bedding. In particular, your top layer, like quilts, comforters, and duvet covers. Since our beds are usually the biggest items in our bedrooms, giving our beds a fresh look with new bedding will make a noticeable difference.
We keep a cotton white comforter on our bed throughout the year. It’s the perfect layer for cooler weather and when our home is air-conditioned in the summer. The soft green (duck egg blue) quilt layered on top of the white one is not new, but we have not used it on our bed in a couple of years. We don’t like duvets. Although it would look lovely at the end of our bed, we find them heavy and cumbersome and would just end up on the floor.
As part of this update, I also wanted to add some color to our room, still keeping it restful and calm.
I just love this tranquil comforter. The color and the little fabric-covered ball details make it something out of the ordinary.
When you think about updating the top layer of bedding on your bed, you should also think about other important bedding items that will help you create a finished look you’ll love. Will you use shams that match or complement the bedding? Are you using a bedskirt? Do you need one? We replaced our bed a couple of years ago with a platform bed. Our old upholstered bed and bedskirt were relocated to a guest room.
I added white quilt shams and Euro shams to match the green quilt.
Choose New Pillows
Aside from choosing a new top layer for your bed and the pillows that complement it, decorative throw pillows are one of the most significant updates you can make to give your bedroom a fresh, updated look. I love pillows and the way they create a coordinated, designer look to a room, so I use them liberally.
Pillows add that extra layer of texture, color, shape, and style to a bed.
The brown buffalo check pillows are made from the same fabric as our curtains, and the middle pillow features a combination of colors found in the room. Because I use lots of warm neutrals in our home, I can easily add more pillows to our bed or change them out depending on the season or my whim.
Switch Out The Curtains
Most bedrooms could benefit from curtains, no matter the size. Along with your bedding, curtains can also make a huge difference when added to a bedroom. Choose curtains that complement your wall color, bedding, and other prominent decor in your bedroom. Most importantly, curtains should meet your light needs if you are not using blinds or shades.
Hanging curtains as close to the ceiling as possible and allowing them to touch the floor will make a small bedroom look larger. Depending on your windows, opt for more than one panel on each side for fullness and a more tailored feel.
These curtains once lived in our living room and dining room, and now have a happy home in our small master bedroom. I wanted to bring more pattern and color into our room, and what we already had worked beautifully.
Blinds That Work With Your Needs
Everyone should think about their needs when it comes to light and darkness in a bedroom. This is a very important step in decorating a bedroom for comfort. Asking yourself a few key questions will help you match blinds and curtains to your preferences, including whether you will open and close them. Do you like a dark room when you go to bed and wake up? Or do you prefer the light to naturally darken at night and brighten with the sunrise? Then find the blinds or shades that meet those needs.
We are early risers, so we love having our room get lighter as the sun comes up. I often don’t set an alarm when I don’t absolutely have to be somewhere at a given time, and the light in our room wakes me up. It’s a very luxurious feeling! We also chose a motorized, remote control system.

Art
When decorating a bedroom, art is a wonderful way to add beauty and personality. It sets the mood of the room and makes it feel finished, as it draws your eye up and makes the walls in this room feel more interesting. Art doesn’t have to be expensive; your bedroom is the perfect place to choose pieces you love.
We have had the botanical picture over the nightstands for almost two decades. They hung in our large StoneGable bedroom and then in the hall at the Tanglewood House. And now they are back in our master bedroom. I found them at a furniture store showroom. You can see a poster-sized print of them HERE.
What a difference the Audubon swan print added above our bed made to our room. I love Audubon paintings. So, this is a personal piece that makes me happy every time I look at it.
We have pictures of our family above a bench on a wall that is not shown. One of my children does not want images of their children shown online.
Clean Off Your Nightstands
A clutter-free nightstand makes such a difference in a bedroom. A nightstand that has only the essentials creates calm and order in a room meant for rest.
My nightstand can get a bit cluttered with lip balm, face cream, supplements, my phone, a book, a tumbler of water, and other items that tend to accumulate. I feel so disorganized when my nightstand gets chaotic, so I make it a rule to clear it off before I go to bed and keep only the most necessary items on it. My phone, water, small boxes, and flowers are the only things I keep there overnight.
One way I keep clutter at bay is to use stackable boxes that sit on the nightstand. They hold lip balm, an elastic band for my hair, and a small bottle of hand lotion. The round, stackable baskets on the bottom shelf of the nightstand also hold things like body lotion, supplements, and anything else I might need near my bed.
A clear nightstand helps your whole room look tidy and pulled together.
Add Flowers Or Plants
Every bedroom benefits greatly from fresh flowers or a plant or two. It’s a lovely finishing touch. It adds a bit of organic softness and makes a room feel well-cared for.
Fresh flowers and greenery create a calm atmosphere, and that’s exactly what we want in our bedrooms. The beauty of these lovely touches is that they can reflect the season or your mood. Flowers on my vanity and nightstand are a must!
Decorating a bedroom without buying new furniture is such a practical and rewarding way to refresh and update your space with a few changes that have a big visual impact. You can decorate a bedroom that feels pretty, polished, and personal. We spend one-third of our lives sleeping. Shouldn’t our bedrooms be a place we want to spend time?.
I hope you will look at your bedroom with fresh eyes and give it a thoughtful and beautiful update.

Hi Yvonne,
I have searched the web for a solution to hiding my ugly CPAP machine and have found nothing. Do you have any suggestions for camouflaging? I have generously- sized nightstands. The machine sits on a glass-topped tray to prevent possible water damage should it leak. The tray with the machine, a small vessel with greenery, and a lamp are really the only things that are on my nightstand but the machine just visually “screams” at me every time I walk in the room. Any suggestions?? Thanks so much!
I’m going through the same thing since my husband just got a machine. I found there are bedside tables made for CPAP machines – they open in the front and there is one shelf inside and space below the shelf for supplies. Then there is a hole (one of each side depending on what side of the bed) for the hose/head piece to come out. I’m looking at that option. Also, have though about a basket of some sort to set it in on the bedside table that has a lid and could cut a hole in the side for the tubing to come out. It is the first thing I notice when I go into the room….. Ugh.
Thank you, your ideas are helpful.
Marcia, we have the same issue as we are “dueling pappers”????. We have two of those ugly machines. My friend suggested to make room in our nightstands and put them there. She actually runs her hose and cord from her drawer. That would not work for us for space reasons but they do fit in our drawers. In our downsized home you can see into our master from the living room. Maybe this will work for you too.
Hi Marcia, I’m not very familiar with a CPAP machine. So I don’t really have any suggestions. See June’s comment, she has an idea for you.
Target sells a light gray fabric box with lid for $10. It is made by bright room. It fits our caps perfectly!
Thanks for letting us know.
You mentioned that the botanical prints over your nightstands are now available at Amazon. Can you provide the link?
Check the post again. There is a link for poster size prints. They are out to stock in Amazon.
I love all your rooms, and I try to emulate where ever I can. I love using all the neutrals the last few years. I checked your LTK, but I don’t see a link to the botanicals that you said are on Amazon now. Do you happen to have it? Thank you, Yvonne !!
I actually found them through google lens! Thanks!
Thanks for letting me know.
They are out of stock on Amazon. I left a link for where you can find poster prints of them.
Check the post again. They are out of stock in Amazon and a kind reader found posters of them.
Yvonne, as soon as my son buys a house his old bedroom set goes with him. Then I will eagerly be moving furniture to our guest room from our master. I would love a platform bed. I regret the beautiful duvet set I purchased from Pottery Barn. You probably know to get the best pour in theirs is to add two inserts not one. Needless to say when we downsized I did it all but now even though it is beautiful I yearn for the coverlet style you have. Seems like the older I get the more simplistic I want my surroundings. Besides those duvets are heavy and cumbersome. I too would love if you find a link on Amazon for those botanical prints you have if you would post. I have been looking for years with no luck in finding them anywhere including Amazon. Great post today!!!
June, I also bought a duvet cover & shams from Pottery Barn when we bought a King bed. We find when the down insert is in the cover it is too heavy. I really like the pattern so I still use the pillow shams and fold the duvet cover on top of my coverlet, leaving my duvet bare but light and fluffy. My duvet is under the coverlet so the bed looks generous and oh so comfy.
Thanks for the easy solution!
You are welcome, June. Happy decorating.
Sorry, they are now out of stock. I forgot to delete and content about finding them in the Shopping Guide. I’ll fix that.
Hi Yvonne
I love the new look, not very different but enough so that you feel different about it. I especially like your new flower and bird front line pillow. Very romantic looking. I have to tell you that when I moved back to Canada, I rented an apartment and decorated to my liking. I disliked my bedroom for a few months, then I actually went to a second hand store and found a large drapery of flowers and bird material (a bit like your new pillow, but in tangerine and green pattern) and was able to make a bed skirt out of it. I also trimmed large pillows for the back row, and a front rectangle pillow with the same fabric (three rows all together). I have loved my room ever since. It is really pretty. You’ve often inspired me with your tips. Love,
So glad you are inspired by StoneGable and are enjoing your home in Canada!
Is the bed you linked the one you have? How is the quality?
Hi Sarah, our bed is out of stock, however I chose a bed that had the same look as the one we have, and with excellent reviews. The headboard is a bit taller. Hope this is helpful.
Some years back I saw your bedroom with the quilt and shames with the long animal print pillow. It spoke to me. So I purchased it and still love it! It just seems to go with everything. I really enjoy your blog. I like to work with neutrals and green. It’s just so relaxing. My screened porch is black and white with touches of terracotta and lots of ivy. I have my herbs in in terracotta pots in there this year.
Sounds like we are kindred spirits! Sounds so pretty.
I absolutely love this room and how you’ve updated without spending a fortune and using things from other rooms. I do this in my small home all the time. Fresh ideas are always welcome. If you can share .. what is the size of your room? Mine is 10’x11′. So tiny! Barely room for my bed with scrolled metal headboard and footboard, a nightstand with drawers and a small chair. I solved the dilemma of bigger pieces by using my antique oak dressers and chests in other rooms. Keep the ideas coming!!!
Sounds lovely, Peggy.
This will help save money.
Yes, it will!
