4 Quick And Easy Summer Dining Room Centerpiece Ideas

One of the nicest things about summer is the bounty it offers us to decorate our homes. This summer, I am taking a very relaxed, natural, and pretty approach to decorating. Seasonally simple is my summer buzzword! Our dining room is centrally located in our open concept home, so adding a showy centerpiece is a must. I love the idea of decorating with baskets in the summer. So I grabbed a basket that was a good size for our round dining room table and thought about how to fill it with beautiful summer organics.
The best part of these very pretty arrangements, besides the fact that they are almost effortless to make, is that they can be used on any flat surface that needs a focal point. Think about creating one for your foyer table, coffee table, or even an end table.
Today’s post is about creating simple, summery centerpieces that are easy and attractive! Here is a summer basket centerpiece done four ways!
Grab A Basket

Baskets are one of the best accent decor items you can have in your home. They add texture, charm, and a layer of interest to any space, and they are wonderfully versatile.
When choosing a basket for a centerpiece, think about proportion and scale.
I basket for this summery centerpiece should follow the Goldilocks rule—not too big, not too small, but just right for your table and room.
The basket I’m using is one I usually keep books in. It is sturdy, has a pretty braided woven design, and even has cut out handles on the sides. I am actually waiting for a taller, longer oval scalloped basket to arrive, but I did not want to wait to share this simple idea with you.
Summer Basket With Houseplants

This summer basket idea started with a visit to my favorite local Amish greenhouse, just a couple miles down the road. I was looking for something fresh and simple to create an easy dining room centerpiece for our table.
I decided a basket filled with easy to care for plants would be just right. Our dining room gets lots of natural light, so I knew the plants would thrive with just a little watering and attention.

I chose three Swedish Ivy plants for the basket. To keep things simple, I left them in their original nursery pots and tucked small bowls underneath to catch any extra water. That way, nothing would leak into the basket or onto the table.

If I were planning to keep this arrangement all summer, I would have transferred the plants into aged terracotta pots.
Summer Basket With Geraniums

It didn’t take long before I thought about how pretty a few blooming annuals would look tucked into the basket on the dining room table. I use annuals throughout our home all season. It is one of my favorite ways to decorate.
So I headed back to the Amish nursery and came home with three beautiful white geraniums. Geraniums are so forgiving and will last for weeks indoors with just a little care. I like to think of them as long-lasting cut flowers.

To soften the look, I added another summer annual with delicate, lacy blooms that give this basket an airy, almost ethereal feel.
Like the Swedish Ivy, I kept all the plants in their nursery pots and placed small bowls underneath to catch any water. You can see the edges of the pots through the handle openings, but I do not mind that at all.

Pick your favorite summer annual or a mix of them, and enjoy their beauty indoors.
Summer Basket With Showy Cut Flowers

Adding cut flowers to a basket makes for a stunning and easy summer showstopper. Our oakleaf hydrangeas are just starting to bloom, and I cannot wait to use them in this arrangement in a week or two.
But until then, I reached for some of my favorite faux blooms. These real-touch white hydrangeas are so beautiful and convincing. Showy cut flowers are ideas number three and four in this summer centerpiece idea.

I cut the faux stems and arranged the hydrangeas in three mason jars placed inside the basket. The jars helped the flowers stay upright and spread out naturally.
I also ordered faux white peonies, which will arrive tomorrow. I am already excited to give them their turn in the basket.
With just a few simple elements, you can create a centerpiece that feels fresh and welcoming. Whether you fill it with plants, blooming annuals, or showy cut flowers real or faux, a summer basket centerpiece is such a lovely way to celebrate the season right at your table. I hope you will style one for your summer home!

Frequently Asked Questions
Summer offers a bounty of beautiful blooms perfect for centerpieces. Some favorites include hydrangeas, peonies, sunflowers, and daisies. These flowers not only thrive in the summer heat but also bring vibrant colors and textures to your table. Mixing in greenery like eucalyptus or ferns can add depth and a fresh scent to your arrangement.
The size of your centerpiece should complement your table without overwhelming it. A centerpiece should be approximately two-thirds the length of the table. It’s important that a centerpiece is the right proportion for the table and scale for the room.
Absolutely! High-quality artificial flowers can be a great alternative, especially if you’re looking for a low-maintenance option. They won’t wilt in the summer heat and can be reused for future arrangements. Mixing artificial flowers with real greenery or other natural elements can also create a more realistic and dynamic look.

Love this basket idea! I use faux florals and have a number of “house plants” in pots, so will definitely try pulling them together in a basket sometime this summer. Thanks!
So glad you like this idea, Teddee!
Yvonne,
You will love those faux hydrangeas. I received both shades of green last week and the quality is amazing and realistic. I have all ten in an urn in my bay window above my kitchen sink. I finally changed out the dried ones from our previous home that I gingerly moved to our rightsized home last year. It was bittersweet but I have to say the tones of green remind me of my previous homes hydrangeas before they were dried. Would love to know what you think of them????
The faux hydrangeas are the most realistic looking and feeling hydrangeas I have every used. And the price is amazing!
I love these ideas…and it never occurred to me to use annuals inside…which other annuals besides geraniums would you recommend to use as decor in the house?
Use perennials too. Think of more hardy annuals and perennials.
Yvonne, I love all of your basket arrangements you have made for your dining room table. You always do a wonderful job with all your floral arrangements! My favorite is the one you made with the white hydrangeas. I love hydrangeas and have the same ones. Friends have to go up close and check them out. They can’t believe they are faux! I also love your basket with your white geraniums — so beautiful. Your wicker basket is so pretty. I also like the set of scalloped baskets that you listed. I think I might need to order this set. I really like scallops on baskets. Thanks, Yvonne, for your lovely ideas. Have a blessed week!
