Let’s make your home feel beautifully festive, bringing warmth, charm, and a little Christmas magic to every room.

When To Start Decorating For Christmas

With Thanksgiving falling so late this year, many of us are feeling the urge to enjoy our Christmas decor a bit longer by starting earlier. There’s something beautifully comforting about filling our homes with Christmas decor, so if decorating before Thanksgiving feels right to you, go for it!

There is really no right or wrong answer to when you should start decorating for Christmas. You should decorate when you’re comfortable.

As a blogger, I’ve decorated for Christmas before Thanksgiving, which I would have never considered doing. I liked each holiday in its own little box! Since we have celebrated many Thanksgivings under the glow of the Christmas tree, we have come to understand that having our home decked out for one holiday does not take away from the other. And we can enjoy our cherished decorations without rushing to get them up during the busiest time of the year.

However, if you are a one-holiday-at-a-time lady, it does not hurt to start planning your Christmas decor because it takes time and thought. You need to consider a color scheme and theme and decide where everything will go, so it’s a good idea to start that planning now. This way, when you’re ready to begin decorating, you’ll have a clear vision and all the essentials to create a beautifully festive home.

The thing to remember is that decorating is not a race! You do what feels best to you!

Declutter And Clean

Before decking the halls, take some time to declutter and clean your home for a fresh start. Christmas decorations look best in spaces that feel open, organized, and ready to welcome the season’s beauty.

Start by clearing away any unnecessary items, tidying up shelves, tables, and other surfaces where you might want to add a holiday touch. Give each room a quick refresh by dusting, vacuuming, and polishing—this small effort makes a big difference. A nice tidying up is all that is necessary unless your home is way overdue for a deeper cleaning. Mostly, you want to make space for your Christmas decor and not have to clean it while you are decorating!

Choose A Color Scheme And Theme

Do you choose a new color scheme and theme each Christmas? Or do you stick with your favorite tried and true colors and a most loved theme?

Choosing A New Color Scheme And Theme

If you would like a new look or you want to update the colors you have used forever, picking a color palette and theme is so smart because it will make Christmas decorating so much easier! Doing this is creative and exciting and helps our home look cohesive and curated! In other words, everything looks effortless! It may not be effortless, but it will be so much easier!

Here’s the easiest way to choose new colors for your Christmas home: use colors that complement your home’s color palette and the Christmas decor you already have! And choose a theme that would fit right into your home’s look and feel! However, it’s important to note that I use many things I’ve had for years and years because I would not dream of decorating for Christmas without them!

I’m creating a look similar to last year’s Woodland theme this year. All the colors work with what we already have in our home, and much of our fall decor will be refashioned for the Christmas season with the addition of evergreen and other holiday organics.

Choosing A Holiday Theme

Every year, I like to think of a few words that describe the feeling and look I’m trying to bring from an idea to a reality in our home. Last year, it was Woodland Christmas. This year, I’ve expanded it a bit to be A Woodland Walk. I am still using the woodland theme but highlighting things like birds and berries. I like the idea that as your eye travels around the room, it finds different woodland themes as if you are finding them on a walk.

This might be a bit too involved for most, but holding on to those words helps me stay on track!

I don’t get theme-y regarding things like snowmen or Santas. I think this can be limiting.

Using Your Favorite Color Scheme And Theme

For some of us, Christmas would not be Christmas if we did not display the cherished decor we used, had, and loved over the years! My mother has used the same decor for decades. I can’t tell you the warm and nostalgic feeling I get when I visit her at Christmastime!

The key to Christmas decorating is doing what feels right for you and your family!

Inventory Your Christmas Decor

Before you start decorating, go through your Christmas decor stash to see what you already have. Pull out everything and lay it out, giving you a chance to revisit items that hold memories, bring you joy, and might work with this year’s color scheme and theme. Sort through each item and ask yourself if it’s something you truly love and want to use to decorate your Christmas home.

Select decorations that work well with your color scheme and theme. Separate these keepers from those that may no longer fit your style or theme. This is a great way to see what you already own, avoid duplicating decor you don’t need, and make sure the decor you display in your home works together to create a festive, cohesive look.

Once you’ve chosen your favorites, note anything you still need to complete the look. Whether it’s a specific color of ribbon, a few more ornaments, or a fresh wreath, having a list of missing items will keep your decorating on track and help you avoid unnecessary purchases. This quick inventory will also make decorating feel more organized, letting you focus on what truly makes your home feel festive and beautiful.

Borrowing, Making Or Buying What You Need

Before borrowing or buying what you need, start by making a detailed list of the items that would complete your Christmas decor. Take a look at the spaces you’re decorating and note anything missing that would bring warmth, style, or a festive touch. Do you need a few more ornaments (we are adding birds to our tree this year), a tree skirt or collar, or some cozy pillows to tie it all together? Once you have a clear idea, you’ll be able to seek out only what’s needed, saving both time and money.

Here are a few ideas for sourcing those items:

  • Ask family and friends: Sometimes, family and friends have extra holiday decor they’re not using and would be happy to lend it. It’s a great way to find unique items that fit your style. Our basement is a Christmas decor lending library for our children! It’s so heartwarming to see the decor I’ve lent them in their Christmas homes!
  • Start making items now: Start making a few handmade items for your Christmas home now so you will have plenty of time to finish and enjoy them.
  • Visit local thrift stores or consignment shops: Thrift stores are treasure troves of affordable, one-of-a-kind holiday decor, perfect for finding almost any kind of Christmas decor.
  • Check online marketplaces. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace and buy-sell-trade groups offer gently used holiday items at reasonable prices, giving you access to high-quality decor without the retail cost. This is addictive!
  • Look for community holiday swaps: Many communities or neighborhood groups organize decor swaps, allowing you to trade some of your gently used items for new-to-you pieces.
  • Borrow from nature: Fresh pinecones, evergreens, and holly branches bring a natural, festive charm and can often be gathered for free. Always my first go-to source!

With a well-thought-out list and these resourceful ideas, you’ll find it easier to check off each item and work toward creating a beautifully festive Christmas home.

Where To Begin

When you have done the planning and are actually ready to start decorating your home, it’s best to focus on creating one captivating focal point in each room.

Best Christmas Decorating Tip

One lovely arrangement, centerpiece, or focal point in a room is all it needs to look like Christmas! These main pieces create the foundation of your holiday decor, anchoring each space with seasonal charm.

I do this when I decorate for Christmas every year! I decorate my mantel first (big focal point), put an arrangement on the white buffet and in the center of the dining room table, add a vignette on the sunroom coffee table, and put one big centerpiece on the kitchen island. The arrangements, centerpieces, and vignette loosely work together! In addition to the focal point, I add any candle to give it a finished look.

Next, for an extra layer of comfort and to continue your Christmas color palette, incorporate pillows and throws that hint at the season.

Decorating Your Tree

Decorated Christmas tree

For most of us, decorating a Christmas tree is a wonderful tradition, and deciding when to decorate it often depends on your schedule, preferences, and whether you’re using a real or faux tree.

A real tree is magical with its fresh pine scent and hundreds of tiny lights! But it’s best decorated a bit later to keep it looking fresh throughout the holiday. On the other hand, a faux tree can be decorated as early as you’d like without worry.

Decorating your home with focal point arrangements, centerpieces, and vignettes allows you to set a festive scene early in the season, giving you flexibility around the timing of your tree. This way, you can start enjoying Christmas decor around your home and save the tree decorating for a special moment when you’re ready to fully embrace the holiday spirit.

We are adding a tree to our loft this year that our children and grandchildren will help us decorate the weekend of Thanksgiving!

Christmas Decorating Should Be A Process

I save hanging wreaths on mirrors, adding bowls of pinecones or Christmas villages, and other decor I’ll use until after I’ve added the focal points, pillows, and throws to each room. These lay the foundation for the rest of your holiday decor and will help you decide what other Christmas accents you need for each room.

The key to decorating for Christmas is to take it step by step. There’s no need to decorate everything at once. I find it much more enjoyable to build up my holiday decor thoughtfully over time, creating a beautiful crescendo that feels relaxed and easy!

A beautifully decorated room is a process!

Christmas Gift Wrapping

Coordinating your gift wrap with your Christmas decor adds an extra layer of holiday charm and creates a cohesive look throughout your home. Choose wrapping paper, ribbons, and tags that complement your color palette and work together. This will make each gift look beautiful and elevate the overall holiday decor in your living space.

Wrap As You Go

Instead of waiting until the last minute, consider wrapping gifts as you buy or make them. This keeps things manageable and allows you to arrange wrapped presents under the tree, on shelves, or in baskets around the house. A beautifully wrapped gift is a gift in itself!

Gifts As Christmas Decor

Think of wrapped presents as part of your holiday decor. Whether they’re under the tree, stacked on a sideboard, or artfully arranged in a decorative tray, beautifully wrapped gifts add texture, color, and personality to your home. With a bit of planning, your gift wrapping can be just as much a part of your holiday home as the garlands, wreaths, and lights.

Decorating for Christmas can feel like a big task, but breaking it down into thoughtful steps makes the process enjoyable and manageable. Start with the basics—decide on a color palette, create focal points, and gradually layer in the special touches that make each room feel festive. Using these 10 steps, you’ll bring warmth and holiday beauty into your home without feeling overwhelmed.

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to decorate; the best approach is the one that brings you joy and reflects the spirit of the season.

  1. I love all your great suggestions for Christmas decorating. I always begin my decorating by putting the nativity up first. This intentional act reminds us of the real meaning of Christmas…..the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

    1. I LOVE that idea, Susan! You are so right. I think I’ll do that this year too!
